The name "Virginia" is the oldest designation for English claims in North America. Earlier attempts had been made by the Spanish in what is now Georgia (San Miguel de Gualdape, 1526–27; several Spanish missions in Georgia between 1568 and 1684), South Carolina (Santa Elena, 1566–87), North Carolina (Joara, 1567–68) and Virginia (Ajacán Mission, 1570–71); and by the French in South Carolina (Charlesfort, 1562–63).

Really great "old school" history book of the early colonial period in the New World. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in colonial history. This author was a eminent historian in his day, and one quickly gets that impression after a few pages of reading.

On April 10, 1606, King James I (ruled 1566–1625) issued a charter creating two companies for Virginia, one based in London and one in Plymouth, to settle all of the land between the Passamaquoddy Bay in Maine and the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. Plymouth would get the north half and London the south.

Virginia was founded with a certainty of common humanity that had disastrous consequences for its native peoples. The English established Jamestown in 1607-in what was to become their first permanent settlement in America-with all the mixed motivations of benevolence and grasping desire of any colonial enterprise. The Colonial and Early National Period (17th century to 1830) . The first European settlers of North America wrote about their experiences starting in the 1600s. John Smith wrote histories of Virginia based on his experiences as an English explorer and a president of the Jamestown Colony. These histories, published in 1608 and 1624, are among the earliest works of American literature. Nathaniel Ward and John Winthrop wrote books on religion, a topic of central concern in colonial America. Anne Bradstreet’s The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America (1650) may be the earliest collection of poetry written in and about America, although it was published in England.
