In 1908 easterners Mary Ellicott Arnold and Mabel Reed accepted appointments as field matrons in Karuk tribal communities in the Klamath and Salmon River country of northern California. It is a true story of women who came into "Indian country" in the late 1800's and did what the men before them could not. They made friends with the Indians they were sent to help. The bonus for me is that I live in Northern California and the story takes place near my home. 2 people found this helpful.

Song: Story of Two Girls in Indian Country in 1908-09. I also read this book as I was hiking through part of the country Mary described, which was pretty nifty. The stories about White Puppy made me laugh and cry.

In 1908 easterners Mary Ellicott Arnold and Mabel Reed accepted appointments as field matrons in Karuk tribal communities in the Klamath . In doing so, they joined a handful of white women in a rugged region that retained the frontier mentality of the gold rush some fifty years earlier. A story about crossing cultural divides, In the Land of the Grasshopper Song also documents Karuk resilience despite seemingly insurmountable odds. Hired to promote the federal government’s assimilation of American Indians, Arnold and Reed instead found themselves adapting to the world they entered, a complex and contentious territory of Anglo miners and Karuk families.

I read this because a friend of mine frequently mentions that it is her favorite book ever. Now I know why: the two protagonists are so brave and so capable and so cheerful (even when the mule one of them is riding slips while crossing the rickety rope bridge!) It's a pleasure to spend time in their company and the company of the Indians with whom they live and work.

If you love reading about the lives of pioneer woman, those who went out into the world and did something no one else had done ... then I would recommend this book for you! The author did a great job of telling the story of these teachers lives in the back country.
This book was easy to read, the story had me hook and I found myself reading as fast as I could. It deserves 5 stars!

"In the Land of the Grasshopper Song is a compilation of the journals of two single ladies, sent to the very remotest part of California forest by the government to "civilize" the Indians in that area. The setting is a very rugged, steep river canyons and is set in the early 1900s. This is the tale of their two year journey. Get a topo map out as you read it to get the feel of the area and what these ladies were up against.

Love this memoir! So important to get a feel of what was happening to Native communities in early 1900's

Charming adventure tale about two remarkable women who lived in and influenced positively a native American culture in early 20th century.

A wonderful read and true history lesson for anyone familiar with the topography and tribes of Northern California and the Klamath river. A beautiful cultural bridge.

One of the best books I have read. I wish I had lived in those times. Very courageous young women. Loved their story, and the unique angle of comparing diaries to write the story. I have purchased many issues of this to give as gifts.
This was a charming book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Living in the area it is nice to read about some of the history of the area.

It gives a nice feel for the way the locals lived along the Klamath River. Also, a good view of the Indians lives. I only wish the women had gone back. I came away feeling sad that they left the area when they did.
