Boston might not be the first place you think of when you’re listing famous French cities. It has no French quarter, and its most famous landmarks and monuments are thoroughly American. And yet, as Rhea Hollis Atwood points out in her book Boston’s French Secrets, the name Revere was originally Rivoire and the name Bowdoin is an Anglicization of Baudouin. Even one of the city’s principal tourist destinations bears a French name: Faneuil Hall. Boston rarely acknowledges its French heritage, but it’s worth noting that tickets for the Bastille Day celebration of the Cultural Center/Alliance Francaise on Marlborough Street are generally sold out at least seven months ahead.

If you really want to uncover Boston’s French heritage, there’s no better way to do it than to use Boston’s French Secrets as a guide. The author provides a brief, highly readable summary of French immigration to Boston and then makes that history come alive with a series of five illustrated walking tours, covering downtown, the waterfront, the financial district, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay. Each tour features an easy to read map, walking directions, and photos of landmarks and portraits of historic figures, as well as enchanting anecdotes. The anecdotes run the gamut: from the arrival of the city’s first French chef, hired to run the kitchen at the Parker House hotel, to a brief biography of Louis Comfort Tiffany, who created the stained glass windows at Arlington Street Church.

Boston’s French Secrets is a fascinating look at some of Boston’s lesser known history, but it’s more than that. Each of its walking tours is also a highly engaging way to reach your day’s 10,000 steps. I recommend this book as both a source of entertainment and a way to satisfy your Fitbit.

Having been born and brought up in Boston I especially appreciate this contribution to understanding one of America's premier cities. I have dined at the Union Oyster House many times but now know of its 'French connection' as the one time residence of a futre king of France, Louis Philippe. I had been to Paul Revere's house but did not know of his French heritage. Readers will find this book a perennial source of information and visitors will dip into this well of lore to experience a rich history of French influence.
