Opened in 1942, the base closed in 1995 and its airfield is now Griffiss International Airport, owned by Oneida County. Aircraft depicted are the B-52 Bomber releasing cruise missiles, KC-135 refueling plane, F-94 Starfire, F-86 Sabre, F-80 Shooting Star, F-89 Scorpion, F-102 Delta Dagger,.

Located strategically in the center of the state, the city of Rome is deeply rooted in military history. Home to several pre–Revolutionary War fortresses, it was in Rome that the stars and stripes was first raised in battle on August 3, 1777. In 1941, the location and resources in and around the city made it an ideal location for an air depot. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, construction of the Rome Air Depot became a major priority for the war department. The mission of the depot was storage and aircraft maintenance or repair. In 1947, the name was changed to Griffiss Air Force Base, in honor of Lt. Col. Townsend Griffiss, a Buffalo native and the first aviator killed in World War II. The base hosted many missions over the years, from electronics and communications research to the air defense missions of fighter jets and the alert missions of the B-52 bombers, until the base was deactivated in 1995.

An excellent work on an air base where I served from 1972 - 1973 And which I still fondly remember.

"Images of America: Griffiss Air Force Base," is a welcome inclusion in Arcadia Publishing's vast library of local history books. The author spends an adequate amount of time in each of Griffiss' time periods, through the base's shutdown in the mid-1990s.

As a Cold War aficionado, I enjoyed the photos of the 416th Bombardment Wing's B-52 Stratofortresses and the "Long Arm" of the Strategic Air Command. The post-BRAC photos about the Rome, NY area was interesting and adds to the chronology of the area.

One drawback of the book I noticed, are the inclusion of **many** photos of unit patches from the base. Some of patch images were just photographed/scanned from the primary article. While most military vets reminisce about the units they served with, for the layperson's interest in the activities and base 'goings-on' the patches just offer one less opportunity to display a photograph and have a good caption explaining it.

Overall, its a good look back at Rome, New York and Griffiss Air Force Base. A worthwhile pick if you've got a Air Force book collection at home or are from the area or were stationed there. Other interested parties should retrieve through Interlibrary Loan or preview online before purchase.
