Blood River is a graphic novel with a very well-written story that has a wonderful flow to it. Mike Oeming, normally an artist by trade, is also one hell of a writer. It's not always simple to take a true story and make it interesting but he and Berman were up to task. The stuff about Zep was great as it is a nice change of pace/addition of humor to a book with such a dark story. Brian Quinn's sequential art is excellent. Having only seen his pin-up and illustration work in the past (with Weird NJ, Weird US, etc) this was really refreshing and eye-opening as far as talent is concerned. For a first try at a full/extra-length comic it's incredibly impressive.

I like that there wasn't a clear-cut supernatural-ness to the story, even at the very end.

While there are some similarities in the look of two of the main characters, you have to take into consideration that it was the 70s and people who hung out, smoked dope, dropped acid and camped in the forests of Tom's River all had a tendency to sort of blend into one persona. They looked alike, talked alike, and seemed to be more alike than anything else, so that shouldn't be a problem. There's always the soul patch to tell the two guys apart.

The additional sketches in the back of the book give a lot of insight into what Quinn was working on even back in the end of '03 when the idea first started out.

Nick Fillardi's cover colors are a great bonus. His work with Grounded and NYC Mech have led him to get better and better and his work here is testament to this. It would have been nice to see the whole book in full color because Fillardi's work compliments Quinn's style nicely, but the mood is probably better set in the black and white style that the book went with.

Hopefully there'll be more from this collaboration of talent in the future. This comic is definitely recommended.

Blood River is a great little thriller, with quite a few unexpected twists. Perhaps the first unexpected - but welcome - deviation is the art. The story is told in a woodcut style that takes a minute to get used to, but beautifully evokes the mood of the story, from psychedelic drugs to the looming forrest at night. This is genre-bending at its best. Is it true crime? horror? a little of both? Read on and make your own decisions! Plus, there's a special treat at the end with bonus sketches and developmental art, giving us a great window into the creative process that made this unique book!

This was good.

The wood cut style art was really cool, nothing I had ever seen before in a comic. It was kind of hard to tell the two protagonists apart at first, but you eventually get used to it.

The dailouge and characterization were really true to life, like I was hanging out with a couple of stupid stoners.

The plot was interetsing. It started out interesting with a focus on the characters, then it got a little like a typical horror film, but then it took this huge left turn at the end. I really enjoyed it.
