Good collection of Ares stories.

Beware: This collection is not illustrated by Cary Nord. I like his artwork and order this book because he's listed here. He's only the cover artist. The interior artwork is not what I expected. Plus more than half of this collection is a reprint from a previous Ares book.

There is a reviewer that is correct in pointing out that Cary Nord does not draw the whole series. In the future, it would be wise to check out [...] for full information on writers and artists, since Amazon or Diamond made the mistake in this case, not Marvel.

5 of the 8 issues in this collection are a reprint, but they are from a story that did not reach a wide audience but has proved critical to mythology in the Marvel Universe. The first series by Oeming and Foreman is a wonderful blend of action, mythology, and even some mundane family comedy. I was surprised how well the series made me sympathize for Ares, without making him appear weak or doing anything that would be uncharacteristic of the God of War. The stories that have followed up on the "Ares: God of War" series include Bendis' Avengers work (Mighty Avengers, Vol. 1: The Ultron Initiative and Dark Avengers, Vol. 1: Assemble), Hickman's Secret Warriors (Secret Warriors, Vol. 2: God of Fear, God of War), and Pak and Van Lente's Hercules (Secret Invasion: Incredible Hercules TPB). A fan of any of these should do himself a favor and pick this up. While Mikaboshi does not speak in haiku as he does under Pak and Van Lente, his constantly shifting form does much to make him a fearful and unsettling villain.
Oeming has a very similar series in God Complex, as both series follow a Greek god living in the normal world, selling antiques to get by until something pulls him back into his old world. I found this series far superior, possibly because Foreman is far better suited for the epic action-heavy tale and the mini-series format forces it to get to its point in a quicker fashion.

Gillen's "Dark Avengers: Ares" goes for a very different tone, with a dark humor as opposed to "God of War's" sprawling epic. Even with the different tones, both series do a good job of writing Ares as a sympathetic, yet incredibly brutal character.
Gillen does make good use of Greek mythology as the tale progresses and shows a great gift for dialogue that imbues character into both Ares and his elite Shades group, who serve as the series' framing device. He is particularly imaginative when it comes to how magic works.

I highly recommend this collection either for anyone stooped in the Marvel Universe or anyone trying to get into comics.

I do feel sympathy for any writer who has been tasked with penning solo stories for Marvel's Ares title... Ares is easily one of the dullest, most static characters in the Marvel universe, a banal stick-figure of meaningless violence with no intrinsic personality or even semi-believable motivation. From his earliest appearances in "The Mighty Thor" to his deadening inclusion in the current Avengers sagas, Ares is just a gaping, black hole of wasted ink and effort. Marvel could let him lapse back into dormancy and I'm sure very few readers would care. (Axton)
