Cooking with Food Storage book. This has made my family dinner time a lot more easier to plan. The book is arranged by day of the week, with the dessert menu in the very beginning and recipes for large family gatherings in the back. There is a wide variety of dishes, over 400 recipes. There are no pictures, but that's alright. There are a few ingredients that I might change as I am cooking the recipe simply because I might not have the exact item in the recipe or we didn't like it as spicy.

I've had this book about a month. It is written from a Mormon perspective and addressed to Mormons. Regardless of your religious beliefs, Mormons embrace long term food storage and LDS is an outstanding resource for long term food storage. Likewise, the contents of this book are applicable and very usable for all. I am not a Mormon but since this book has "Mormon" on the cover I knew what I was buying and don't at all mind the occasional reference to LDS prophets; unless you're a hater I doubt you will find issue with it either, but easily offended may want to pick books without "Mormon Pantry" on the cover. Otherwise, this is the one book I would most recommend to anyone of any faith getting into long term food storage as it is very well rounded and the most practical and useful overall. Beyond being a beautifully illustrated and designed book it is the best resource I've found on "eating what you store".

That said, the book itself does a great job the following areas:
1) Explaining the basics of long term (thus mostly dry) food storage
2) Listing the base food storage items & amounts needed per adult per year
3) Listing additional dehydrated foods & spices worth gathering
4) Touches on food production & preservation (gardening, sprouting, dehydrating, canning, etc.
5) Brief summary of emergency essentials
6) Recipies, recipies, recipies specific to the above listed food items

With #s 1-5 above, you can definitely find more details on the web or in other books. While the author attempted to give a brief, concise overview in these areas, her main goal (which she achieved with flying colors) is to provide everyday recipies using items in your long term food storage pantry. This allows you to practice the recipies, acclimate your family's tastbuds, and rotate your stock. You will know how to prepare your 400 lbs of hard red wheat rather than stare at it while you starve. Speaking of which, also pick up "No More Bricks! Successful Whole Grain Bread Made Quick & Easy" by Lori Viets (self explanitory, great detailed info for whole wheat baking). Another great "eat what you store" book (which you'll see is more like a "store what you eat" if you buy the book) for mid-term storage canned goods is "100-day Pantry: 100 Quick and Easy Gourmet Meals" by Jan Jackson. Jan's book concentrates on can-only recipies based on rotating store-bought canned goods (which could be substituted with home-canned if you're into that). While canned goods loose some nutrients in canning, they provide easily rotatable foods which provide more variety to your pantry & are easy for kids to prepare. These 3 are a fantastic combo & available from Amazon; if you can only afford one, get "Cooking with Food Storage Made Easy" by Debbie Harman, who has done all of us with long-term pantries a great service by writing this book.

This book combines using dehydrated and canned ingredients to make a years' worth of meals. You still need a stove and some fresh ingredients (cheese, frozen peas and carrots) though so it's not like some pantry cooking where you are truly in the last days. There are hundreds of recipes in this cookbook. They use rolled oats, flour, dry milk, dehydrated potato slices, etc. It shows how much of each pantry item you need for a whole year. For example, rice is 65 lbs per adult, dry milk is 24 lbs per adult, oil is 10 qts per adult.
There are chapters to plant and then can your own garden vegetables. There are also recipes for making your own applesauce. I've done that and it's so much easier and cheaper to just buy applesauce for the pantry. But the recipe is there should you need it. There are also recipes for canning your own meat.
The recipes in this cookbook use what the ready.gov website considers essential foods. They are called essential because you could survive on these foods should you have to. The book certainly delivers on what it says. There are no actual photos just some drawings.
I liked this book better than Simple Recipes Using Food Storage- Nonfiction, Emergency, Preparation, Cookbook- An All Encompassing Guide to Food Storage- Essential Book for Anyone Just Staring Out but I liked 100-day Pantry: 100 Quick and Easy Gourmet Meals the best. It had recipe conversions so that you could use fresh ingredients should you not have dehydrated vegetables (for example if you didn't have dried onions it said to replace with 1c. fresh diced onions).
All the books deliver on using strictly pantry ingredients to make dinner; though not necessarily saving money.

Good suggestions. Things I haven't thought of but need to do or get (evaporated milk and adding cayenne and salt to my canned chicken). I didn't know about how long things keep. Oatmeal lasts a long time either twenty or thirty years, will have to look at that again...so I have been buying things that last longer, example wheat unprocessed.

Recipes on using your food storage either in an emergency or on a rotating basis.

I absolutely love this book!!! I'm new to food storage and find the whole thing just a little overwhelming. This book is just what I needed! Not only is this book pleasing to the eye and fun to read, but it breaks the process down very nicely and makes the whole thing much easier to even think about. I definitely recommend this book if you're interested in starting your own food storage and don't know where to begin. You will not be disappointed!
