Ritchie Robertson is Fellow and Tutor in German at St. Series: Oxford World's Classics. The story is surreal yet the main character Gregor is completely relatable. The story starts out as funny, but grows sadder and sadder until the ending, which admittedly is strange enough to be the ending of a Sundance film. Honestly, if this book had come out a few years later it could've been an artistic surrealist cartoon. This is one of those speculative frictions that doesn't actually explain why something is happening, only that it is.

Joyce Crick taught German at University College London until her retirement. Her translation of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams won the Shlegel-Tieck Prize in 2000. Publication Date: April 12, 2012.

Kafka published two collections of short stories in his lifetime, A Country Doctor: Little Tales (1919) and A Hunger Artist: Four Stories (1924). Both collections are included in their entirety in this edition, which also contains other uncollected stories and a selection of posthumously published works that have become part of the Kafka canon. Enigmatic, satirical, often bleakly humorous, these stories approach human experience at a tangent: a singing mouse, an ape, an inquisitive dog, and a paranoid burrowing creature are among the protagonists, as well as the professional hunger artist. The tales are among Kafka's best-known, haunting and compelling satires on the human condition, on art and artists, and on life itself, which complement his major fictions. Translated by the award-winning Joyce Crick, the book includes an invaluable introduction, notes, and other editorial material by renowned Kafka scholar Ritchie Robertson. There is also a Biographical Preface, an up-to-date bibliography, and a chronology of Kafka's life. This volume completes an Oxford World's Classics set of five Kafka works, in distinctive complementary cover designs.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. I ordered this for an English seminar and knew what to expect from the literature-- I expected the text held more criticism. Buy the book for Kafka, and if you are looking for criticism covering the writings, as I was, look elsewhere.

This is a great collection of some of Kafka's stories with some end-notes detailing of Kafka's literary allusions. It doesn't have almost any criticism to it, but it does not claim to be a critical edition. The extras that it does have are quite useful in understanding the text, and there is a bibliography of books of criticism of Kafka.
