Witnessing a horrific car accident seen many times before in her dreams spurs award-winning singer Alexandra Lauren to reevaluate her glamorous Hollywood lifestyle. With her lofty musical goal now tarnished by reality, and her unfulfilled memories from her senior year in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, haunting her, Alex takes a bold step to change the rhythms of her life. Leveraging her newly acknowledged intuitions, she makes a plan to reconnect not only with her musical touchstone and high-school sweetheart Matthew Roberts, but with her desire to impact lives for the good through the innocence and beauty of music. Even though Matt holds Alex in his heart as his only muse, he resolves to ignore her existence. He cannot stay in control with her powerful presence in his life. Besides, how can he ever forgive her? In alliance with their charismatic friend Daniel, her betrayal demolished Matt's joy in creating their hit single, not to mention their future lives, together. Can anything in this world shift Matt's resolve to distance himself from Alex? And, with Daniel still pursuing Alex even as his wife Kathy looks on, can Alex actually find fulfillment? Will music draw the estranged soul mates together again and guide them to realize their dreams?

Hmm, so many excellent reviews. While I certainly enjoyed the book, ultimately I found it a little unsatisfying. Some examples why:

- The dialog was punctuated by lots of slang. Now I was a teenager at the same time as the characters and I only remember a bit of that slang, most not at all. Is it because I'm Australian and the slang is US? Maybe. It was a little jarring.
- Matt was a very foolish character, although gifted. Who is more likely to have screwed him over music rights? Daniel who he knows is untrustworthy or Alex who keeps telling him how much she loves him? Why on the one hand does he tell his friends he doesn't want attention and gets what he wants, then says he doesn't know what's happening and blames his friends for not keeping him in touch? Why does he blame Alex for not correcting him over the music rights misunderstanding after he told her he didn't want any contact with her? Odd.
- Alex was committed for one person for 25 years. I can understand that to a point but the book also gives the impression that there was no one else during that time or at least no one significant. Maybe. I do also wonder why she would continue to be committed to someone for so long who said he has little regard for her, doesn't trust her, etc. A little puzzling.
- Pretty much all of Alex's dreams seemed to be prophetic, i.e. reflect reality. I'm naturally a bit sceptical but willing to go with the flow with most books if they are enjoyable. But there were so many coincidences.

Having said all this, I did find the book very pleasant reading. It was very gentle, the dialog was mild, there was no violence, the musical themes were nice, it was romantic. The book was structured well, with events cleverly moving between the past and the present. I'd say give the book a go. It's worth reading even though it is a little light and frothy.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, as (like one of the other reviewers) I am not into romance novels, but this one is not exactly that. It has the relationship aspects, but it's also got great elements of intrigue, intuition and "blast from the past." The modern story (2003) is tied to the past (late 1970's), with the story woven in a way that keeps you reading. The whole comes together at the end, with all the pieces finally in place. It was definitely engaging and a nice "escape" book. I'd say a good summer read, but really - enjoyable any time of year.

Sweet and endearing ode to the power of music, creativity and love to inspire our lives. Singer Alexandra Lauren finds the intersection between love and music to bring her world into harmony.

Really enjoyed this book! The author did a great job in helping us really get to know her characters. A lot of the story is told in memories but the transitions were always clear and never confusing. She also gives us different POV's so you can really get a feel for the emotions and the mindset of the characters. Really great read!

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. This story took me away! The ability to relate to the characters and their emotions was part of what captured me . The book takes place in both the past and present and the flow with which the Author moves between the two time periods is incredible. A great read that takes you from our younger innocent self to a time of more maturity.

The book had a cover that peaked my interest and I was glad I read it. Ann did a great job of bringing you into the various characters and going back & forth between past and present. It was a good love story. Thanks

I grew up in Coeur d'Alene and went to school with Ann. I was taken on a stroll down memory lane while reading this book. Anyone who grew up in or around Coeur d'Alene will love the imagery that Ann creates. Good story line with great detail combine for a fun read.
First, you should know that I'm not a huge fan of the romance novel. I'm more of fantasy novel geek, Tolkein, R.R. Martin, Rothfuss, you get the picture. I had just finished the Chronicles of Amber series when I picked up Rhythms & Muse for a "break." What a delightful treat! This well written tale was just the breath of fresh Idaho air I needed. I couldn't put the book down, I just had to know what was in store for Matt and Alex. Set in the lovely town of Coeur d'Alene in the late 1970s, it brought back memories of my own high school days and the the music of the times. Do yourself a favor and get into the "rhythm" of Rhythms & Muse. If you're a romance fan, you'll love it. If you're not a romance fan, you'll love it too!
