Plot in 3 sentences: Jake Rawlings is an injured firefighter that is recovering on a guest ranch that he inherited from a father he didn't not have a decent relationship with. Callie Hayes is the fiercely hardworking manager of the ranch who is fighting to keep Jake from selling the ranch. Even though they try to keep things 'light' between them, they fall in love, save the ranch and end up having their HEA.

The author does a great job describing the hard work that is put forth by running a guest ranch. So much so that I wasn't sure why Callie loved that particular lifestyle. Jake goes from a studly indestructible fire fighter to a lame duck that is completely living outside of his element. He is not comfortable with a ranch lifestyle.

It's fairly obvious who is causing the problems at the ranch- and it sets up a decent plot by displaying how much Callie trusts her staff and will go to bat for any of them. It's shows how strong her character is.
Her characters is amazing. Coming from nothing with no definitive skill set. She proved herself to be strong, independent, smart and hard working.
Jake takes a bit longer to grow on you. He is out of his element, so he isn't able to show off his amazing skills. He flounders a bit, but as time goes on, you can see how his respect for the staff, Callie and others grows. He respects the land, the hard work and begins to love it.

The only big negative for me was how Jake and Callie would put a hard stop on a smexy scene, or a good deep conversation by (either internally or externally) by reminding themselves or each other about how Jake's visit was going to end soon. How they couldn't be a relationship. How Jake was going to be leaving. How they were not compatible. Etc. It was so repetitive.
Jake, 'let's have sex'
Callie, 'okay...but remember - you will be leaving.' or 'no, we are compatible' or something like that.
Either just commit to having a short term affair. Or just nix it. The back and forth was supposed to be emotional for the reader, just came off as a bit contrived and annoying.

The characters were likeable, but I never felt a strong relationship with them. Didn't feel that interested in their story.
Jake's brother Tucker was a different story. His tenuous relationship with Amy was very compelling and interesting. Looked forward to reading more about them than Callie and Jake. It seemed like the readers are just waiting for Jake and Callie to get over being their own obstacles and move on. But Tucker and Amy had some real issues to deal with. Tucker was absolutely adorable in how he was so careful with Amy. Amy has a lot of emotional strife and she really trusts Tucker. Watching their relationship bloom was very sweet and endearing.

The second book in the "Firefighter" Series.

Jake a firefighter in California that takes some time off after an injury that almost cost him his life. Now being accused of hurting the kid he saved and being sued by his patents he needs to get away to recuperate from his injuries and fight back this lie. With the media hounding him he decides to return to the Blue Flame Ranch. A place he inherited from his absent father and a place he hates. The only good thing about the whole situation is seeing Callie again.

Callie has always loved the Blue Flame Ranch. She came here when she was only 19 years old, scared, homeless, and jobless. Richard took her in and she's lived and worked here ever since. This is her home, the place where she feels safe and where everyone is family. Jake needs to sell the place and frankly he couldn't care less about this land and even though she's been getting ready to buy he's just too soon and she's not ready yet. She can't loose her home and neither can all the misfits that are her family now including Jake's brother. But what can be worse than losing the place she's always loved? Losing her heart to the one man she can't resist. When Richard died she almost lost her heart to him but he was gone before the funeral was done. Now he's staying for months and there's nothing she can do to stay away from him.

What Jake finds in this beautiful land is more than he bargained for. From love to family to an end to his loneliness. Will he sell anyway? Will he turn his back on Callie and everyone and walk away? A beautiful story that will make you wish you were at the Blue Flame Ranch camping with them. Great secondary characters. Can't wait to read the next book in the series "Seeing Red."

This second book in the Firefighters series, after White Heat, was alright but I did enjoy the first book more.

"Blue Flame" was a bit disjointed with secondary characters that weren't developed to much of a degree. Callie Hayes, the manager of the Blue Flame Guest Ranch in Arizona, and Jake Rawlins, injured firefighter and owner of the Blue Flame, are more fully developed but I still would have liked to know more about them (OTHER than their sex lives). I like romance with my romance novels not JUST sex.

Also, I would have liked the location fleshed out. This takes place on a guest ranch in Arizona and we find out what the buildings look like more than the countryside.

This wasn't a terrible romance novel but I do like author Shalvis' more recent books.
SARAND
Loved this story of Callie and Jake. Read it twice. Injured firefighter Jake goes to his inherited working ranch to heal for a while. He has no interest in keeping the ranch and he's looking to sell. His estranged younger brother works and lives on that ranch, along with a myriad of characters and animals. Included in this group is the beautiful, tough, hard working Callie. They all call the ranch their home and look out for each other, except for Jake, who feels like he doesn't belong. What will happen to them all when Jake sells? This story was sweet, exciting, hot, touching, and even had a little mystery. I really enjoyed this one!

I make no secret: Jill Shalvis is one of my favorite authors. In each story, she creates an amazing cast of characters with whom it's impossible NOT to fall in love. Jake and Callie, the hero and heroine, draw readers in from the first and take them on an amazing ride. But be prepared to also fall in love with Tucker and Amy and their storyline. A happy, go-to read.
