Being the Remarkable Adventures of Raffles Holmes, Es. Detective and Amateur Cracksman by Birth. By. John Kendrick Bangs. Lord Dorrington, as you may have heard," said Raffles Holmes, leaning back in my easy-chair and gazing reflectively up at the ceiling, "was chiefly famous in England as a sporting peer. His vast estates, in five counties, were always open to any sportsman of renown, or otherwise, as long as he was a true sportsman. So open, indeed, was the house that.

This baby grew up, and didn't know whether he wanted to be honest like his father, or steal like his maternal grandfather. So he compromises, and does the worst thing he can do. He becomes a thief while parading around like the greatest detective since, er, Sherlock Holmes. Tacking the name "Holmes" on it just adds insult to injury.

John Kendrick Bangs created Raffles Holmes, son of Sherlock and . R Holmes & Co, published in 1906, is accomplished pastiche. The book slips by as effortlessly as R Holmes through a deserving victim's window.

John Kendrick Bangs created Raffles Holmes, son of Sherlock and grandson of Raffles (yes, really - chapter two explains). This third (or possibly second) generation offspring has characteristics drawn from both his forbears: he is an accomplished cat burglar, a thief with a conscience, a master of disguise, and a man-about-town with an amanuensis to record his exploits. The style is established early - cats in the night are "vagrant felines on Cupid's contentious battles bent" - and remains true to itself.

SHERLOCK HOLMES MAY BE THE greatest detective ever. But it turns out his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, was no slouch himself. In a gripping new book, Conan Doyle for the Defense, journalist Margalit Fox tells the maddening story of how a German-Jewis. And then there entered upon the scene that marvelous man, Raffles Holmes, of whose exploits it is the purpose of these papers to tell. I had dozed perhaps for a full hour when the first strange sounds grated upon my ear. Somebody had opened a window in the kitchen of the first-floor apartment below, and with a dark lantern was inspecting the iron platform of the fire-escape without.

I am the son of Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective, and . But they both told me, and now that I am satisfied that there is a demand for your books, I a. .

I am the son of Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective, and grandson of A. J. Raffles, the cricketer, si. I gazed at him, dumb with astonishment. As a matter of fact, Sherlock Holmes was put upon a Raffles case in 1883, and while success attended upon every step of it, and my grandfather was run to earth by him as easily as was ever any other criminal in Holmes's grip, a little naked god called Cupid stepped in, saved Raffles from jail, and wrote the word failure across. Although somewhat dated to their period, these stories are easy to read and still can be enjoyed

This is ridiculous. Sherlock Holmes married the daughter of a criminal, and they had a baby, "Raffles Holmes". This baby grew up, and didn't know whether he wanted to be honest like his father, or steal like his maternal grandfather. So he compromises, and does the worst thing he can do. He becomes a thief while parading around like the greatest detective since, er, Sherlock Holmes. Sheer stupidity. Tacking the name "Holmes" on it just adds insult to injury. I didn't finish this book.
