Victory Meat: New Fiction from Atlantic Canada. Geography has always played a role in great fiction, making an anthology based on a specific region a promising idea. The designate new is questionable: half of the stories here have seen previous publication. As well, seasoned writers like R. M. Vaughan and George Elliott Clarke stand out as particular abuses of the word new. But the stories from the collection’s more experienced entrants are generally the best.

This is the story of Ramjohn, the ultimate outsider - a West Indian immigrant and lapsed Muslim who finds himself in a society where being from away is considered only a step or two above having been in prison. This is a new kind of East Coast story, the kind celebrated in Victory Meat. The Maritime provinces are currently awash in great writing.

Lynn Coady (born 1970) is a Canadian novelist and journalist. She was raised in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. In 1996, Coady relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of British Columbia.
