Janis Ian and Mike Resnick with a host of science fiction talent have produced a written album of stories based on the .

I actually read the book too, but the audio version impressed me more.

Janis Ian has inspired fans for years with her lyrical and evocative music . My copy of the print version, which was signed by both Ian and Resnick, was damaged beyond repair in some otherwise minor flooding in my home a few years ago, so I was glad to get this new version. Stories by famous successful SF authors based upon songs of Janis Ian. Janis Ian's songs have better lyrics than tunes, and these stories fit the feeling of the stories very well. They may be more "literary" than some readers like. I'm a big fan of hers.

Janis Ian, Michael D. Resnick, Mike Resnick. I like Janis Ian and I wanted to see what pro songfic looked like. Mostly they just used the songs as epigraphs or similarly; some were relatively literal (for sf values of literal, as when Society’s.

Throughout my life, books have been my window into another world. I was always terminally un-hip in school; the library saved me, hiding me from the cruelty of other children while its books showed me life as it could be. I left school at fifteen, but I’ve derived quite a good education from my reading. I’ve never been to medieval Japan, but I can cheerfully describe the living conditions and hierarchies, thanks to books.

I was ready to post my review here on Amazon and saw 15 reviews here before mine. But all of them are from the printed version of the book. Amazon has an odd policy of sometimes - not always - of combining reviews of audio versions of a book with the printed version. This is one of those cases. It appears that my review is the first of the audio version. And, for those who enjoyed the print edition (which I have not seen) or are big Janis Ian fans (I am, having met her nearly 50 years ago - really ! - when she had just recorded "Society's Child"), you will probably want this version for a number of reasons:

1. You can hear Janis, herself, read the introduction and one of her own stories.
2. You can hear professional audiobook readers (some, like John Rubenstein, are well known actors) read the others.
3. There are about 31 stories here.
4. The two CDs in the package the MP3 files and the total running time is 20hours and 38 minutes! (Yes, you read that right) and the list price is under $15.00 (less than a single Janis Ian music CD). Talk about great value.

I will admit that I've just started the audiobook - and it will be a while before I can find time to listen to it all. But I love what I've heard so far.

If I have one complaint about this audio package from Brilliance it is that there is no index or listing of the stories or the authors. It's not on the package cover or inside and all the tracks (the MP3 files) just have a number (no words). It would have been helpful if Brilliance had included a .pdf of the stories and authors on the CDs. I didn't see any.

So if you want to hear these stories come "alive" and hear Janis' own voice (among others), I can recommend this audio version. (By the way, I also recommend the audio version of Janis' autobiography, which I reviewed last year on Amazon. I actually read the book too, but the audio version impressed me more.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

I already own this book in hard copy but I liked it so much I was thrilled to be able to get a Kindle version.
I've been a fan of Janis Ian for decades and of science fiction for just as long, so this anthology is literally the best of both worlds for me. I was already familiar with some of the authors featured, but thanks to this book I have discovered some other new found favorites. The fact that they all thought highly enough of Janis Ian's songwriting to be willing to compose stories inspired by her songs says volumes about them to me, and made me even more willing to become a fan of their work.

"Stars" took this non sci-fi reader by surprise. Upon opening this anthology I'd not been exposed to most of the contributing authors, however I have come away with a deep respect for each of their talents! As a fan of Janis Ian's, I was very familiar with her body of work and was eager to see how her songs had influenced each story. I'm thrilled to say that the direction these amazing writers took their chosen song/lyric was brilliant and many times unexpected. A fabulous collection, and not to be missed!

As one of the authors included in this anthology, I'm a biassed reporter (grin). However, having listened to the audio version of the my story in this book, I'd like to say that it's a superlative edition. The reading that the narrator gave my story added depth and richness to the text in a way that gave it new dimension and life.

Professionally read, beautifully presented audio book version of the original anthology. My only quibble is that there doesn't seem to be an index that shows you where one story ends and the other begins (I'm on disks eight and nine) (shameless self-promotion).

This is a lovely audio treatment. I'm sorry that I don't have the name of the narrator who read my story so I could thank her in person (grin). My story apart, I can recommend this as a listening experience for people who enjoy premium quality science fiction narrated by wonderful talents.

Excellent read from the best science fiction writers, period. And fascinating back story. Janis Ian rocks in music, sci fi writing, and editing.

Each story in this collection has a different narrator, providing tons of flair and uniqueness to each story. The songs are are second to the stories in this set, however they provide great interludes (ranging from minutes to 10 seconds). The stories are very diverse covering a wide range of moods while sticking to the sci-fi theme. The jump from incredibly depressing to downright hilarious may be jarring for many listeners, however it fit perfectly for my tastes. Highly recommend this to any sci-fi story fan.
Janis Ian and Mike Resnick with a host of science fiction talent have produced a written album of stories based on the songs of Janis Ian. There is a mutual admiration society going on between the authors Janis asked to write stories based on their favorite Ian song and Janis, who is a major science fiction fan and a very good author. I'm glad she chose music first, because I have loved her work since I was a teenager...her songs remind us that we are all aliens in some form or another...but I hope she writes more fiction soon.

I actually have 2 copies of the book, one hard cover and one kindle. I recommend it 100%
