Dylan Thomas: Portrait O. .has been added to your Cart. The "Young Dog" of the title is of course Thomas himself, and this volume of autobiographical stories by the great modern poet, who died at 39 while on his third lecture tour in the United States, shows his waggish humor at its best, his exuberance and verbal magic in spectacular display. It also shows him a spinner of tales and a creator of memorable characters.

Dylan Thomas must have been a great fan of the Just William stories, the first of which came out when Thomas was eight. When I first read that story I was reminded of a gentlemen who lived next door but one to us when I was an eight year old. He ran the office of a small factory in Leamington Spa, travelling there on an engine assisted bicycle. When I read Thomas’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, I always think of Mr Hayes, and that book, and the day he died one summer’s afternoon listening to the cricket.

I don't like Dylan Thomas' short stories nearly as much as his poetry and Under Milk Wood, but he.This is how Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog came about. These are autobiographical stories, fairly straightforward despite being "poetic", and almost nothing like Joyce's Portrait.

I don't like Dylan Thomas' short stories nearly as much as his poetry and Under Milk Wood, but he certainly has a way with words, with descriptions that are fresh and different. For that it gets an extra star than I would normally give it. A couple of these stories - 'A Visit to Grandpa's' and 'One Warm Saturday' - are really going to stick in my mind.

Dylan Thomas, born in Swansea in 1914, is perhaps Wales' best-known writer, and celebrations throughout 2014 will mark the centenary of his birth. He is widely considered to be one of the major poets of the 20th century, and many of his greatest poems, such as 'Fern Hill' and 'Do not go gentle into that good night' remain among the nation's favourites. As well as poetry, Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories and scripts for film and radio - none more popular than his radio play UNDER MILK WOOD, which is considered by many to be his masterpiece.

He was caught in the whirl of a scrimmage and, fearful of the flashing eyes and muddy boots, bent down to look through the legs.

His father told him that story: his father looked at him through a glass: he had a hairy face. He was caught in the whirl of a scrimmage and, fearful of the flashing eyes and muddy boots, bent down to look through the legs. The fellows were struggling and groaning and their legs were rubbing and kicking and stamping.

I am a huge Dylan Thomas fan and have been searching for a nice book of his short-stories for some light reading. This book is the perfect size for an afternoon in the park or a middle-of-the-workday break. It’s around 150 pages and paperback, so it’s lightweight and easy to take on the go. Thomas’ poetry is definitely interesting and insightful into the mind of a British poet in the early 20th century. He writes of his childhood memories, mesmerizing tales of love and loss, as well as some funny anecdotes of boyhood adventures. A great purchase for anyone looking to get into Thomas’ works.

Heartbreakingly beautiful prose by a great poet. I found the youthful exuberance and frolic of the childhood stories to be infectious. At the same time, there is error and cruelty, humiliation, emotion and sadness. The young adult stories take on a darker quality and are increasingly self-aware of the sadness that underlies all of us just beneath the facade. The description of living conditions of early 20th century Wales is hair raising.

Dylan Thomas was a great writer, but frankly, a much, much better poet. Here, in this book, the short stories seem to have been written in a rush, without a second revision or editing, which was much needed. If you are truly devoted to D. Thomas, buy the book, otherwise, let it pass. It is also a true shame that his alcoholism prevented him from achieving higher dimension in the literary world. What a waste!

Here is your chance to fall in love with Thomas' writing. Short stories, full of imagination and taken from his own life experience including childhood. A great tutor to prepare the reader for the more challenging Dylan Thomas poems. Forget about his tumultuous life, just read his stuff, over and over again, aloud. And then go to Wales and visit the places he lived and wrote.

While Dylan Thomas commands accolades for his poetry, I found his prose to be murky and confusing. I was expecting so much more.

This memoir is painful, beautiful, rugged. He shows himself to be proud, horrid, loving, sentimental. It is a small collection of short, powerful stories that span from childhood to young adulthood. He refers to himself at times in first person, other times in third (so you have to pay attention!). Growing into manhood, observing others and being observed. He expresses experiences of personal pride and humiliation with equal relish. Portraits of others in his life are humorous, admiring and at times sad. Hanging out with odd-balls; learning about women. It may have been a simpler time for technology, but the emotional struggles, the economic realities, the physical exertion required in a life in early 20th century Wales were harsh. All-in-all, this book is unforgettable.

I would rather read this book than any by James Joyce. Thomas may be remembered for his wonderful poems, but his short pieces are, under no circumstances, to be ignored.
Thomas writes of his youth, which is a subject that many writers have attempted to write about, and where they fall short he excells. The stories are nothing but fun. Actually, they are more than fun; they are often beautiful. By all means, READ THIS!
Hemingway once said that "all good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you; the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse."
PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG DOG is one of those happy few books..beautifully written, funny, moving, cruel and joyful at the same time..please read it!!
