By the time Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was twenty years old, he was already being recognized in the Russian literary scene as a great talent. He was born in Moscow and educated at home and at the Lyceum.

The Captain's Daughter. I thought this story started a little slow but then it really picked up. By far the best of the stories and a definite 5 star. 4. Peter the Great's Blackamoor

The Captain's Daughter. Peter the Great's Blackamoor. Pushkin wanted to write an historical novel along the lines of Waverley by Sir Walter Scott. Pushkin never ceases to amaze me with all the twists written in this short prose. There is a reason why Russian writers are one of the most profound type out there and this is exactly how Pushkin captures the Russian spirit: problematic, tormented by ethical questions, with a very-well defined personality.

The Captain’s Daughter. Of Pushkin’s shorter stories The Queen of Spades is perhaps the most entertaining. It was certainly the most popular in his lifetime. ALEXANDER SERGEYEVICH PUSHKIN (1799–1837), the greatest name in Russian literature, was born in the reign of Paul I – who closed down all private printing-presses in Russia and prohibited inter alia the importation of foreign literature, travelling by Russians abroad and even French fashions.

Often seen as the founder of modern Russian literature and the first important Russian Poet, Pushkin's early works spoke largely to social reform which resulted in his exile to southern Russia until 1826; however, he continued to write unabated for his entire life. His poems and plays incorporated elements of drama, romance and satire that would from then on be associated with Russian literature, and his short stories are deemed by some to be the perfect Romantic tales.
