The Cataract of Lodore" is a poem written in 1820 by the English poet Robert Southey which describes the Lodore Falls on the Watendlath. One of Southey's most popular poems, "The Cataract of Lodore" made an early appearance in Joanna Baillie's 1823 anthology, Poems, Chiefly Manuscript, and from Living Authors. On its inclusion, Baillie wrote Southey, "Your Cataract of Lodore has pleased & amused me exceedingly.

The Cataract of Lodore. Come down at Lodore?" My little boy asked me. Thus, once on a time

The Cataract of Lodore. And then came another, To second and third. The request of their brother, And to hear how the water. Comes down at Lodore, With its rush and its roar, As many a time.

Reading Southey's "The Cataract of Lodore" gave me the experience as of watching a spectacular waterfall. I managed to find a photograph of the waterfall which, however, disappointed me. I guess it was taken during a dry spell. Southey's description of the waterfall is a masterpiece. The poem creates a wonderful image of a lively waterfall. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he spirit of the waterfall has been captured in words for eternity by Southey.

The sound and motion of water spring forth from the pages as the river runs "spouting and frisking" and "whizzing and hissing" down the mountain.

by Robert Southey & illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein. And moreover he tasked me/To tell him in rhyme. Because I was Laureate /To them and the King. Rhymes indeed, cascading as uninhibited as falling water!

This is a wonderful book to introduce poetry to young people. Although the poem was written almost 200 years ago, it is still a delight to read. The illustrations provide beautiful support to the poetry. Both the poem and the illustrations will be enjoyed by children of all ages.

Of course, poetry is all words and pictures in your mind... but my opinion is that young children will have trouble with this book simply because it uses words like "moreover," "anon," "laureate," "vocation," and many others that most adults would have to look up in a dictionary to fully understand.

One deliciously clever part of this book is that the text changes as the water flows over a waterfall. (You have to turn the book to read it, as the waterfall goes across the pages from left to right and the words are turned sideways to follow the flow!

If you're looking for a beautifully descriptive poem with lots of old English language, this is perfect. The illustrations are lovely and the poem itself is wonderful... but children may need quite a bit of explanation and assistance if they were to read or listen to this book.

As a teacher, I'd say a practical use might be to give sections of this poem to children (older grades) and have them practice their context clue and dictionary skills to figure out what the words mean.
