The Cataract of Lodore" is a poem written in 1820 by the English poet Robert Southey which describes the Lodore Falls on the Watendlath. One of Southey's most popular poems, "The Cataract of Lodore" made an early appearance in Joanna Baillie's 1823 anthology, Poems, Chiefly Manuscript, and from Living Authors. On its inclusion, Baillie wrote Southey, "Your Cataract of Lodore has pleased & amused me exceedingly.

Reading Southey's "The Cataract of Lodore" gave me the experience as of watching a spectacular waterfall. I managed to find a photograph of the waterfall which, however, disappointed me. I guess it was taken during a dry spell. Southey's description of the waterfall is a masterpiece. The poem creates a wonderful image of a lively waterfall. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he spirit of the waterfall has been captured in words for eternity by Southey.
The sound and motion of water spring forth from the pages as the river runs "spouting and frisking" and "whizzing and hissing" down the mountain.
