If you love poetry -- or even if you don't -- read this book. These seemingly straightforward poems will hook you and reel you in. In the title poem, "The Transparent Dinner," the family is at dinner and the narrator of the poem is passed a slice of Turkey Pot Pie by her father. It ends with the line,

I will do it first. I lift my fork and begin to eat.

And I'm left wondering and thinking about the darker side of family dinners. Were mine that bad? Were yours?

These poems will get you thinking about your own family life -- was it that twisted? Did I ever think about what the coroner would do with my body after I'm dead? These poems rarely look at the world straight on. Written with a real feel for language and imagery, thses poems write about family, about love, about the neighborhood, the neighbors, about us all. You look in and marvel.
Error parents
Christine Hamm's Transparent Dinner illustrates the psychological breaking down of the American daughter. Beginning at the dinner table, this daughter intuitively knows her fate, and is forced to come face-to-face with her incompetent (at best) and malevolent (at worst) mother. You feel the daughter's frustration, especially in My Mother's Basement and Door where the girl attempts to force her mother to acknowledge/protect/respond.

The title is aptly named - the "dinner" becomes a physical reaction in the reader: a visceral queasiness with a world that is not safe or certain. The reader becomes an active participant in this "growing up," witnessing a wide variety of Selves eating Selves, where people are represented in a very organic way. Several of the poems beautifully reflect the animal side of the human animal.

The Transparent Dinner is a complicated deconstruction and rebuilding of the feminine spirit. This book is powerful, perverse, and highly recommended.
Morad
Brutally frank and wildly poetic, Christine Hamm's poetry stays with you. This is not poetry for the faint-hearted. Come and wiggle into the nest of family dysfunction that Hamm has so thoughtfully prepared for us. You will feel right at home, even if you'd like to pretend otherwise. You have to be willing to be as courageous and unblinking as Hamm is to get it, but don't expect to be as idiosyncratically brilliant as she. Wow, those images just keep on ticking. She knows a bunch of dirty little secrets and she is willing to share. "Listen to her at your peril," she writes in the poem "Period." And that's good advice. Did I mention that she is funny too? These poems are heartbreaking, raw, original, and filled with an antic, just right kind of joy, "a joy that teaches...small", but delivers big rewards to the reader.
