In this video from 2006, the magnetic New Zealand Samoan poet Tusiata Avia performs a poem from her first collection Wild Dogs Under My Skirt. More recently this book featured at the New Zealand festival as a "fearless and enchanting piece of theatre" under the direction of Anapela Polataivao and a cast of six powerful Pasefika actresses. We simply can not wait to see this dynamic performer bring her work to life right here in Marlborough in July.
A bit about Wild Dogs Under My Skirt: Samoan New Zealander Tusiata Avia's poetry examines and celebrates what it is to be a Samoan woman, painting a deeply personal view of Pacific Island life and its sometimes uneasy collisions with the Kiwi way. Here, director Anapela Polata'ivao. Here, director Anapela Polata'ivao and a cast of six powerful Pasifika actresses breathe provocative new life into the much-loved piece. Wild Dogs Under My Skirt plays at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington as part of the NZ Festival, today - Sunday. Cousins Talk it Out, part of the NZ Writers & Readers Festival, Circa One, Friday.
Tusiata Avia’s first collection of poetry Wild Dogs Under My Skirt draws on two different cultures, and charts the sometimes painful points of their intersection. These poems are both confrontational and entertaining, raw and lyrical; they occupy legend and history – "we are direct descendants of flesh-eaters" – yet break through into an urban landscape that is just as arresting and richly patterned.

Born and educated in New Zealand, Avia remains indissolubly connected to her Samoan heritage, even as her poems subvert its stereotypes. Samoa is the Other, a place of differences, and Avia, moving between two cultures while only half belonging to each of them, is our guide to its songs, jokes, customs, clothes, food and games.

Wild Dogs Under my Skirt. Traditional Samoan tattoo artist. The main theme in the poem. The importance of tattoos. A quote that shows the cultural importance of tattoos. Getting tattoos around her thighs is "like paddling across the whole Pacific". Cultural images in Samoa quote (octopus quote). I want my legs like octopus that catch rats and eat them.
