Robert Lowell is best known for his volume Life Studies, but his true greatness as an American poet lies in the astonishing variety of his work. The plot, such as it is, revolves around the breakup with his wife, Elizabeth Hardwick, and his relationship with Caroline Blackwood. In a note prefacing his Selected Poems, Lowell remarked that "my verse autobiography sometimes fictionalizes plot and particular"; by labeling his poems "verse autobiography," he called attention to the inseparable relation between his life and his art.

As for the rest of this giant book, I don't know that Lowell ever matches the titanic brilliance of his early work again but, of course, there are many dozen gems along the way and his excellent poems are another poet's lifetime achievements. In any case, if you're interested in getting into Lowell, I think this is a good place to begin (and end).

Robert Traill Spence Lowell IV (March 1, 1917 – September 12, 1977) was an American poet, considere. Lowell's first book of poems, Land of Unlikeness (1944), did not receive much attention. In 1946, Lowell received wide acclaim for his next book, Lord Weary's Castle, which included five poems slightly revised from Land of Unlikeness, plus thirty new poems. Among the better known poems in the volume are "Mr Edwards and the Spider" and "The Quaker Graveyard in Nantucket. Lord Weary's Castle was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1947.

Robert Traill Spence Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 1 March 1917. His father, also Robert Traill Spence Lowell, was an officer in the United States Navy. Lowell’s mother, Charlotte Winslow Lowell, descended from an old New England family. The book was roundly criticized as inferior to Lord Weary’s Castle, and even Lowell recognized the stiffness of the new book’s dramatic monologues. He and Hardwick spent the next several years living largely in Europe, especially in Italy.
