But Nel lives her life as best she can, honestly and with fortitude. She marries Piet, whose feckless ways ruin her hopes of achieving a decent life for both of them. When Piet dies Nel is destitute and she returns to the Karoo, dependant for the last years of her life on the bleak charity of her youngest sister, who has married a wealthy farmer. To Live is a novel written by Chinese novelist Yu Hua in 1993. It describes the struggles endured by the son of a wealthy land-owner, Fugui, while historical events caused and extended by the Chinese Revolution are fundamentally altering the nature of Chinese society. The contrast between his pre-revolutionary status as a selfish rich idler who (literally) travels on the shoulders of the downtrodden and his post-revolutionary status as a persecuted peasant are stark.

Strout conveys what it feels like to be an outsider very well, whether she’s delving into the quiet inner lives of Somalis in Shirley Falls or showing how the Burgess kids got so alienated from one another. But the details are so keenly observed, you can connect with the characters despite their apparent isolation.

We wanted to take this opportunity to not only pay our respects to such an immeasurable influence on us personally and the rock world at large but also do our part to raise awareness for mental health.
