The Clay Pot Boy. Adapted from a Russian Tale by Cynthia Jameson. Illustrated by Arnold Lobel. Several months ago, the potters who work in a studio near us begged me to write them a book. They claimed they were tired of tales about poor fishermen, woodcarvers and tailors. Power to the potter, they cried. I vowed to write such a story. Cynthia James has beaten me to the punch-or the wheel-with her whimsical retelling of an old Russian cumulative tale. The cumulative tale is, of course, one of the most popular types with young children. The plot spirals upwards and then back down to a turnabout conclusion.

Wanting a son, the old man and woman make a clay pot boy who comes to life and begins eating everything in sight.
