William S. Burroughs.

William S. One of The Soft Machine’s recurrent characters is The Guide, modeled after the local young hustlers who picked William Burroughs up as he explored the jungles of South America in the early 1950s, and any reader entering the book’s alien territory would take the advice of a guide: This bad place Meester.

The Soft Machine is a 1961 novel by American author William S. It was originally composed using the cut-up technique partly from manuscripts belonging to The Word Hoard. It is the first part of The Nova Trilogy. The title The Soft Machine.

William Seward Burroughs II (/ˈbʌroʊz/; February 5, 1914 – August 2, 1997) was an American writer and visual artist. Burroughs was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author whose influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. Five books have been published of his interviews and correspondences

The Soft Machine book. In Naked Lunch, William S. Burroughs revealed his genius. Maybe less of a creative process than just a random throw of the dice. It is the type of novel that possibly, because of the randomness of design, can never be finished.

"The Soft Machine" has its background in the underwater cities of Flash Gordon serials, broken-down towns in South America, faded photos and 1920s films in seedy movie houses. William Burroughs was born in St Louis, Missouri in 1914. Immensely influential among the Beat writers of the 1950s - notably Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg - he already had an underground reputation before the appearance of his first important book, 'Naked Lunch'. William Burroughs died in 1997.

From the 1961 Soft Machine. It is entirely different, for example, from the section following it, minraud, which became the opening of the I Sekuin chapter; but it is a good example of what Burroughs considered too experimentally difficult to retain. In Naked Lunch, William S. In The Soft Machine he begins an adventure that will take us even further into the dark recesses of his imagination, a region where nothing is sacred, nothing taboo. Continuing his ferocious verbal assault on hatred, hype, poverty, war, bureaucracy, and addiction in all its forms, Burroughs gives us a surreal space odyssey through the wounded galaxies in a book only he could create. The book draws the reader into an unmappable textual space, where nothing is true and everything is permitted, to make a total assault on the colonising powers of planet earth that have turned us all into machines.

Burroughs is predictable: he will be Burroughs. This continuation of the notes for Naked Lunch is worth reading for anyone who takes Burroughs seriously, but not too seriously. His element is comedy, and his mastery of the genre shows in the bitter, depressing, spiteful aspects of life against which comedy always functions as the exposure of what happens when a metaphysical ideal meets an actual reality. Although Burroughs should be considered seriously, it is almost insult to him to suggest treating his work seriously. That's the paradox of his message, and if that seems appealing, then I recommend Soft Machine.

burroughs writing is just amazing. you may not like all the gay sex or you may like it a lot. regardless his way with the language is so remarkable that it supersedes everything else. and the cut-up technique pioneered here has become a part of our shared cultural history. if you love writing and imagination do yourself a favor and read it as soon as possible.
also, notes and supporting articles were very helpful in approaching this difficult text. highly recommended.

Burroughs is an acquired appetite. People first encountering his writing usually don't like it or don't know what the hell is going on. They focus on style, or content, or drugs, or obscenity. This is NOT the point! What is really revolutionary about this book is the use of the "Cut-Up Method" (which he attributes to Bryon Gysin). Cut-up refers to a technique in which ordinary linear text is literally "cut up" into short phrases, fragments, and individual words then reassembled using chance and random elements to form an entirely new text. The object was to reveal the true (hidden or subconscious) meaning of a piece of writing, and the result, often devoid of grammar and syntax, could not be interpreted according to traditional standards but calls for the creation of an entirely new literary esthetic and a consequent expansion of consciousness. Each of these "chapters" begins like a short story, easy enough to understand, but quickly degenerates into non-linear fragments of word and image, often with jarring effect, causing an assault on the senses, before recombining into recognizable linear meaning to end the chapter. WARNING: This book can be dangerous. Combining elements drawn from "Naked Lunch" with new material of a violent and sexual nature left this reader with a lingering mood as disturbing as "Justine" by Marquis de Sade. Clearly one of the most important books of the 20th century. (Compare with the drip paintings of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock or the hour-long modal improvisations of jazz musician John Coltrane.)

very good when it is... drags a bit when its not... still you can find something good in it everywhere... skip to Mayan Caper chapter for a more linear story line...
Great writing! Great imagination! Up there with Orwell and Mailer and Thompson. Can't say I've read anything like any of those for the last 40 years. My reading did drop off significantly and that's a good reason why I haven't read. I just haven't tried.
