Marissa Piesman Quote. Unorthodox Practices: Nina Fischman (1989). Law would never make her heart pound or her spirit soar. Nina had known that from the first day of law school when her attention wandered off during a contracts class and had yet to return.

Welcome to New York in the 1980s, where ?the best thing about being obsessed with real estate? is that you can count on it to arise in conversation ?about every ten minutes.? Nina Fischman mostly opts out of those conversations: She?s too busy running down to Housing Court on behalf of her ?poverty law? clients, and tracking down sales on sweaters that camouflage the hips. But Nina?s mother, Ida, has a nose for the market, and that nose gets twitchy when old ladies in her neighborhood start dying, leaving apartments that have miraculously escaped what New Yorkers delicately call ?the cockroach problem.? Someone?s making a killing in real estate.

Quite disappointing since I found, Personal Effects, the first book I read of the Nina Fischman mysteries, to be so very hilarious and well written and entertaining, and, yes, psychologically deep........So, as is my wont, when I discover an author I love, I get all of his/.her books and read them all in some sort of tranced marathon and it is almost always a mistake because some are good and some are not. (Outlander does not fall in that category, for sure......I loved them all)..... Maybe I would have liked this one better if I had read it before Personal Effects And, caveat emptor................these books are really suited only for Jewish women (of a certain age) because of all the ethnic allusions and jokes and true-to-life stereotypes. They are quasi mysteries but actually mostly funny character studies Nina is a lawyer who is asked to solve murder mysteries with the help of her mother, Ida. .......Lo and behold, I looked Piesman up on Google and Linkedin and she is AN ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY for New York........and she has written about 10 books and I actually do plan to read them all. .....She is such a great writer and speaks to me deeply and hilariously with my Jewish upbringing,,,,,

Examples from the book:
Grant Miller, son of a Lutheran minister, found hordes of Jewish girls lusting after his pale scarecrow body. He found them smart, funny and sexy....generously endowed with words, ideas, noses and breasts....He liked the fact that they usually had some extra weight on them. He even got a kick out of watching their bodies shrink and plump up again as they switched from grapefruit back to Szechuan shrimp.

Nina surveyed her tabletop. As a seduction scene, it left a lot to be desired. She had tried to do everything tastefully--flowers, tablecloth, candles, kosher champagne in an ice bucket. But the paper plates and plastic forks somehow detracted. The kosher stuff was a pain. She had cooked everything in Broil -a-Foil. Judah Levy had okay-ed her salad bowl since it was used for uncooked food only. She considered telling him abut salad with prosciutto, but decided to keep her mouth shut. How did people live like this?

Plot was a bit preposterous and too much self-involved status conscious 80s had a yada. Probably would've enjoyed it more back in the 80s, when I was young and thought all that was "smart."

Nina is the amateur detective spoiled brat protagonist. She's a poverty law
lawyer, but she doesn't care about her impoverished clients...her colleague/boyfriend
does give a hang, but at novel's end, when she does finally getting interested in her clients, she blames his sincerity for her previous jadedness...Nina cares about her looks and her I.Q. She's selfish and obnoxious.--Why haven't I said anything about the mystery, you ask? What mystery? There are crimes, and for no particular reason besides mystery novel format's sake, culprits are found. The suspense did not kill me.
To the book's credit, there is snappy writing, and I think the author well portrayed(either gutsily or unintentionally) the worst of herself, as Nina Fischman, and maybe Nina is changing towards the end.
