Translations from Russian). She returned to Russia in 1939 and committed suicide two years later. From "The Heritage of Russian Verse," by Dimitri Obolensky. Marina Tsvetaeva published her first verse in 1911, wrote poems between 1918 and 1920 in praise of the White armies and their fight against Bolshevism, and produced the greater part of her work in Western Europe, where she emigrated in 1922. Her poetry of whirling and staccato rhythms is uneven in quality, but forceful and original.

Although I am learning more and more everyday, some of these words are hard to find on the internet for definitions. I'm learning to read in Russian!) I have spent many hours at the library looking these words up when it occured to me it was referring to medieval Russian History. I very much enjoy this book, however, I was wondering if all his book's are in the Medieval times? My library does not have any information and I can find little detail.

A good collection of Russian verses. It may serve as a material for Russian language and literature courses in colleges and universities and also for everyone interested in Russian poetry.

This is essentially a dual language Russian/English survey of the last eight hundred years of Russian poetry, from the Lay of Igor' to early post-war period. There is no explanation of the context or stature of the various poets, and the poems selected are not among the best from particular authors in my opinon (Blok, Akhmatova, Tikhin, etc.) but there's not a lot out there competing, either. Russian poetry is very moving, classically structured and lyrical. This survey doesn't really do it justice.

I purchased this for my adopted Russian granddaughter so that she may have some history of the writings of her homeland. She loves poetry so feel the book with its Russian expressions will give her joy.
