Style in the Renaissance book. This book acts as a showcase for the range of analysis possible. Although the analytic focus within the genre has traditionally been on literary criticism, stylistics has much to offer.

To date, no-one to my knowledge has applied this theory in an early modern context

To date, no-one to my knowledge has applied this theory in an early modern context. In the sixteenth century, a historical juncture rich in innovative forms of textual expression, the Reformation generated cognitive and ideological discordances between conceptions of the spiritual and the material, or more specifically, between word and image.

In doing so, the author maintains a specific and sustained stylistic focus on the religious, political and ideological issues that animated and defined Reformation England. Each chapter interrogates the dichotomous concept of 'word' and 'image' by considering the ways in which writers of this period deal with these contentious subjects in their dramatic and poetic works.

Representation', Canning argues, 'is not just as a matter of semioticsbut of ideology'. Whereas stylistics enjoys extensive application in the analysis ofcontemporary texts, it has, until now, been markedly under-used in theexploration of the historical literary genre.
