This was identified as Shakespeare by Leslie Hotson in his book Shakespeare by Hilliard (1977). Skeptical scholars believe this is unlikely. Probably made within living memory of Shakespeare. The Chesterfield portrait, attributed to Borsseler, and the earliest known aggrandized image of Shakespeare. In the decades after Shakespeare's death a number of portraits were made based on existing images or living memory. The most important of these are: The Soest portrait, probably painted by Gerard Soest.

The hand descending from the cloud appears to belong to a lady, based on depiction of the frilled lace cuff and the pinkish sleeve. The clasped hands are a symbol of concord and plighted faith, presumably between the sitter and the unseen lady.
