Robert Edward Fleming (born 1936), is an American literary scholar known for his work on Ernest Hemingway. Charles Fletcher Lummis.

Fleming's book explores Hemingway's concern with writers from the 1920s through the early 1960s. After World War II, Hemingway attempted to resume his literary career with Islands in the Stream and The Garden of Eden, neither of which he was able to finish. Hemingway began his career with an easy confidence that he could profit from the errors of other authors he had encountered during his Paris period: his early story "Mr. and Mrs. Elliot" and his 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises depict writers who are flawed by a too-shallow commitment to their art that results in truncated literary careers and inferior literary work.

Fleming breaks new critical ground in charting Hemingway's preoccupation with writers and their roles as artists. The Face in the Mirror" develops a largely overlooked theme in Hemingway's writing-his depiction of writers and the special problems they face, professionally and personally. From his earliest years, Hemingway was preoccupied with the artistic and ethical dilemmas of his writer protagonists.

Robert E. Fleming, author of The Face in the Mirror: Hemingway’s Writers. Like a masterful visual artist who takes a familiar subject and makes it fresh and interesting, James Hutchisson gives us an original and compelling biographical portrait of Ernest Hemingway. By examining patterns in Hemingway's life and providing additional context, Hutchisson enables us to see aspects of the writer’s life and art in a new light. The result is a balanced (if somewhat more sympathetic) view of Hemingway and a worthy counterpoint to previous biographies.

The Face in the Mirror: Hemingway’s Writers. Tuscaloosa: U of Alabama P. Robert E Fleming. The Dangerous Summer. Unpublished manuscript. IN this book a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods South-Western dialect; the ordinary Pike-County dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a hap-hazard fashion, or by guess-work; but pains-takingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech.
