This book was first published in 1975, the bicentenary of Jane Austen's birth

This book was first published in 1975, the bicentenary of Jane Austen's birth. Though she has long been recognized as one of the major English novelists her reputation was established relatively late and has withstood periods of neglect and controversy. The present volume brings together nineteen essays that marked the bicentenary and in doing so reflected the critical attitudes which some of the twentieth century's most influential scholars have entertained towards the novelist.

No book published in Jane Austen's lifetime bore her name on the title-page; she was never lionized by society . New York: Cambridge University Press, 1975.

No book published in Jane Austen's lifetime bore her name on the title-page; she was never lionized by society; she was never two hundred miles from home; she died when forty-two years of age, and it was sixty years before a biography was attempted or asked for. She sleeps in the cathedral at Winchester, and not so very long ago a visitor, on asking the verger to see her grave, was conducted thither, and the verger asked, "Was she anybody in particular? so many folks ask where she's buried, you know!" .

John Austen, Jane Austen’s cousin. This may be a mistake; it is probably the best of Jane Austen’s books, for all the changes in modern taste. But the novelist, as we have seen, had ample opportunity to know the area well long before 1813, the year in which Pride and Prejudice was published. Rosings and Hunsford are almost perfect fits for Chevening Park and its parsonage house. Nevertheless, Jane Austen wrote for publication – there is no doubt about that – making, as Joan Rees has put it, her own quiet revolution in the novel, and becoming in the process the first great woman writer in English. It has many virtues beyond those already mentioned.

I gather that John Halperin’s Life of Jane Austen (2nd e. 1996) is a somewhat controversial work

I gather that John Halperin’s Life of Jane Austen (2nd e. 1996) is a somewhat controversial work. The other thing I did not especially appreciate about this book was the rather simplistic way in which Halperin draws connections between JA’s life and the characters and scenes in her novels. It can be fun as a novelist to slip in little portraits of people and places one knows, and references to real events and opinions; but in an artist of JA’s caliber, these are not ends in themselves.

These essays range from nineteenth-century reactions to the novels and to the novelist herself, through twentieth-century criticism of the individual novels, to considerations of the novelist's reputation abroad. This book will be of interest both to scholars and students of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction and also to the general reader of Jane Austen's novels.
