How to Interpret a Poem. Reading a poem is a lot different than reading a short story or informational text. Does the sound of the poetry have an effect on its meaning? Sometimes authors use sounds to make the poem more attractive

How to Interpret a Poem. To figure out what a poem means you need to look at more than just the meaning of the words on the page. In fact, if you only focus on the literal meaning of the words, you might have a hard time figuring out what the poem is about. Interpreting a poem successfully starts the moment you begin to read the poem. Does the sound of the poetry have an effect on its meaning? Sometimes authors use sounds to make the poem more attractive.

To interpret a poem, you must first understand what it literally says: it must mean what it says. Sometimes that’s all you need, but, whenever a word seems like an odd choice, like saying a child is like a flower or a baseball pitcher communicates, you then ask yourself Why? Why that word? instead of the first word you might use to say the same thing.

Then How Does One Interpret Poetry? In my opinion, if you want to enjoy poetry, you don't interpret it, you feel it in your gut; you send it tumbling from your tongue and stop to taste it in your ears. This book is truly thorough when it comes to teaching me how to interpret poetry. I would most definitely recommend it to my friends.

This book delivers exactly what it promises -- a concise but informative and helpful introduction into the art of interpreting poetry. Laurie E. Rozakis's guide offers definitions of poetic devices and brief explanations of how and why each device used. She offers sample poems and questions for the reader to consider regarding each poem, followed by possible answers to the questions. I found this format very helpful for giving me confidence that I'd be able to apply what I was reading to poems I might read in the future.

Keep in mind that this book is strictly an introduction, and only 126 pages. You won't walk away an expert in poetic analysis, but in my case, I find myself much better equipped to appreciate poetry and eager to learn more on the subject.
Love Me
This book isn't helpful as an introduction to how to read and interpret poetry. It assumes a very modern point of view and neglects most of poetic history. Further it perpetuates old chestnuts like the myth of rhythm in "free verse." Much better is something like Poetic Meter and Poetic Form by Paul Fussell. Even better is Timothy Steele's introduction All The Fun's In How You Say a Thing.
