John Coyne (born 1937) is an American writer. He is the author of more than 25 nonfiction and fiction books, including a number of horror novels, and his short stories have been collected in "best of" anthologies such as Modern Masters of Horror and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror

John Coyne is a ridiculous-good writer.

John Coyne is a ridiculous-good writer. The book's plot device of stigmata seems to put a fresh spin on a much-used trope, the characters, especially Father Stephen's Jewish concubine, ring true and involve themselves in interesting predicaments that thoroughly test their convictions. My only concern with this book comes with the last sexual act. I found it I enjoyed the literary bent of this book, the prose sharp and smart, especially for a genre often thought of for thrills rather than craft.

John Coyne was twelve when he became a caddie at Midlothian Country Club, south of Chicago, Illinois. At sixteen he was promoted to caddie master, which even today he considers the most demanding work he has ever done. After graduating from Saint Louis University, he served with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and did a stint as dean of students at a New York college before becoming a full-time writer.

Betty Sue is an innocent young girl who acts out the agony of Christ once a week. The TV says it's a miracle. The Church says it's a fake. The Church says it's fake. But this is no charade - from her head, hands, feet and side pours her blood. Witnessing this agonizing phenomenon is Father Stephen Kinsella, a Catholic priest whose faith is already unsteady. Is she divine? Or damned?

A tale of lust, a tale of temptation, a tale of sacrifice and prayer and torment - John Coyne offers a story of a young girl afflicted with the stigmata: the wounds and actions of Christ suffered at the Crucifixion, and her interactions with Father Stephen Kinsella.

As someone new to the e-reader market, I came across this title during the Lenten season, hoping for something to invigorate both my imagination and give me some old-time religion. With every page, I wanted more. I'm thankful for NECON Classic Horror for saving this great book and bringing it back into publication so I could get the chance to read it.

NOTHING HURTS WORSE THAN PERFECT LOVE

Betty Sue is a nationwide sensation. What happens to her unwilling body once a week, every week, is haunting, horrifying... and fascinating to millions.

The TV says it's a miracle. The Church says it's a fake. Both are wrong. Only a priest tormented by lust, who is willing to trade body for soul, can penetrate the unholy secret of The Piercing...

The story of a young, confused girl and her sacreligious struggles with the Stigmata and her budding sexuality. This is an excellent book if you enjoy deep, psychological horror relating to Catholicism and its beliefs. I owned a copy of this in the very early 1980s and have only seen it once since then. The recent movie "Stigmata" echoes certain situations I read of in this book, though it's not quite the same throughout... all in all a very intense read. I highly recommend it if you can find it - it's out of print. :(

I've had enough. When you have to skip parts because there's sex it's just a turn-off. From what I've read, a priest with a hidden secret of breaking his vows lol is enough for me. But, it keeps veering off from the possession to his naughty life. Jeewiz!
