The storm's arrival demanded they take what shelter they could find, and the bulk of Gillespie proved enough to break the force of the wind and sand. Huddled among the boulders, they made a dry camp. This is a wonderful story. One of the best features of this book is the majestic descriptions of the area. Desolate but magnificent. I felt I could see it and feel it even though L'Amour's writing style is spare. The clash of the Indian culture against the European invaders is a powerful backdrop to the main story and offers their nobility and strength as well as the tragedy of the struggling people who could not and would not win in the end. The tribute offered to the Indian enemy was chilling. There is a lot of action with both physical strength as well as brilliant strategy applied to win the day. Old fashioned excitement and well worth the read.

I had read this book years ago. My view then was that is was more stolid, a little plodding This time it was atmospheric and entertaining. What really struck me this time was the visceral description of the southwest and it's inhabitants. You really feel transported. Dusty. thirsty and wary.

The story is entertaining. The enigmatic loner who happens upon a hunting party of rich, titled Europeans in an unforgiving landscape. Unfortunately if you ever saw the Sean Connery movie in the late sixties, it will probably convince you to never read a page of Louis L'amour. Pity because they hold up very well and are themselves windows of the past, if only through rose tinted glasses. They could become like popcorn, you can't eat just one!

For a change of pace, I thought I'd go back to read some westerns. Where better than old Louie L'Amour's vast collection of works. This title was fast paced, lots of action, interesting characters (the Sean Connery film was pretty close to this novel's storyline) and the usual deadly Apaches and ruthless gunmen out for themselves. L'Amour's novels are condensed, so don't expect a sprawling epic for the most part, just tight stories and lots of gunplay and galloping stallions and sweat. One major problem with this one, his main characters are constantly 'squatting on their heels'. This happens a lot in this one. A minor point, but why know kneeling or one one knee or some such. Lots of hot coffee gets consumed also. Still, a solid action-packed western with a fleshed out lead characer that was nicely done.

Bought this as a gift for my Dad, he loved. Didn't last very long though. :) As though he ever takes a long time to read any Louis L'Amour books. Both he and I are satisfied.
Simple fellow
Very pleased with this item.

This book had many well developed characters. The dialogue was well developed and each character added an interesting aspect to the story. I would recommend this book. The story keeps you interested in what will happen next. Not a slow spot in the story!

You can never go wrong reading a Lamoure book and this is one of the best
Keeps you going on and on never knowing what was next
Just a little jumbled up in places but a very good book
