He studied dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania, married Lina Elise Roth in 1905, then moved his family west where he began to write novels. The author of 86 books, he is today considered the father of the Western genre, with its heady romances and mysterious outlaws. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) brought Grey his greatest popular acclaim.

It was there in the white heart of the dying campfire; it hung in the shadows that hovered over the flickering light; it drifted in the darkness beyond. This hour, when the day had closed and the lonely desert night set in with its dead silence, was one in which Cameron's mind was thronged with memories of a time long past - of a home back in Peoria, of a woman he had wronged and lost, and loved too late. He was a prospector for gold, a hunter of solitude, a lover of the drear, rock-ribbed infinitude, because he wanted to be alone to remember. A sound disturbed Cameron's reflections. He bent his head listening. A soft wind fanned the paling embers, blew sparks and white ashes and thin smoke away into the enshrouding circle of blackness. His burro did not appear to be moving about. The quiet split to the cry of a coyote. It rose strange, wild, mournful - not the howl of a prowling upland beast baying the campfire or barking at a lonely prospector, but the wail of a wolf, full-voiced, crying out the meaning of the desert and the night.

This story of Dick Gale who has run away from his home in the east to find his niche in the west near the Mexican border is a good tale, though not one of Zane Grey's best. His search to protect a Mexican beauty for a new found friend is honorable, and even his search for love of his own is interesting. But this is not the kind of book that once you put down you can't wait to pick up. Sometimes I had trouble keeping my focus on my reading, and this is because the story sometimes wanders. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, but it moves a bit slow at times and looses my interest.

Of course anything written by Zane Grey is worth reading so I downloaded 'Desert Gold' to my Kindle. The thing is it's one of those westerns that makes you wish you could have been there. The first story finds a man brooding over the love of his life from whom he has been separated by circumstance when he is joined at his campfire by an old man and his donkey. The cowboy is mystified by the talk and actions of this old man who insists on traveling together. The climax of the story is a surprise that will confound you.
The second story is about a young man who leaves home in the city to make his fortune in the wild west. He runs into a former classmate on his travels and together the two of them are in and out of trouble often. There are of course, two lovely women, one a mexican princess, the other a born & bred Westerner. You will enjoy this tale of the old west even if you've never read a western before.

As usual, great read from Zane Grey, great story combining all the usual elements found in the genre. Will recommend.

I usually like Zane Grey, got this one as a mini-book club read with elderly Aunt to discuss.. She read hard cover and also didn't finish. Plot dragged, where there was a story at all. Characters were boring. I have read a lot of Zane and tho a little old fashioned, enjoyed them. This left a lot to be desired. Sorry Zane. Ay least it was a freebie on Amazon for Kindle.

good book
Nuadador
An interesting story at the beginning becomes the solution to issues brought up along the way as various characters are introduced and interact.

A good buy, though bigger than I'd wanted.
One of the great western classics, I loved it.
