Sorry, as tempting as those are, they aren’t on my diet. What, yogurt-covered raisins?. She stares in mock astonishment. Oh, is that what they are?

In this story, Josie Brown has managed to create a robust mix of drama and humor to keep the reader entertained from page one straight through to the end. Looking for a hint of drama? Move on.

One such book I finished was Josie Brown's Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives. Already touted as the perfect summer beach read, this character driven (sometimes steamy) book can best be described as the offspring of an affair between Desperate Housewives and a Jennifer Weiner novel. Brown's book centers around the elite community of Paradise Heights. The main character, Lyssa, is stuck in a rut with her husband, Ted. Soon enough, though, she befriends the new . on the block ) The jinked DILF is Harry who has been deserted by his wife for . .

Josie Brown has taken Wisteria Lane, Peyton Place, and swinging key parties and twisted them into a nice, twisted package called Secret Lives. com User, June 5, 2010. I totally loved this book. The antics of the mommy-clique are hilarious, but the deeply emotional friendship between SAHM Lyssa Harper and DILF-y Harry Wilder made the book a stand-out! 0. Report. Recently Viewed and Featured. Suburbia is a jungle, filled with lots of vicious creatures. Take the Paradise Heights Women’s League board. Lyssa Harper should have warned golden-haired DILF du jour Harry Wilder what he was getting into when she invited him to meet the mommies who run their suburban, gated community. At least he brought cupcakes. Since meeting the former Master-of-the-Universe turned stay-at-home single dad, Lyssa has been his domestic Sherpa, teaching him the ins and outs of suburban life. She just didn’t realize her friends would show up at his house unannounced with casseroles, leopard-print bikini briefs, and plans to rearrange his kitchen cabinets. The truth is, if Harry and his wife, the neighborhood’s "perfect couple," can call it quits, what does that mean for everyone else? Lyssa’s husband, Ted, is a great father, but he pays her Pilates-pumped momtourage more attention than he does his own wife. Her friends gossip about the neighbors while ignoring their own problems: infertility, infidelity, and eating disorders. When Harry sets boundaries with his new fan club, he is exiled from the neighborhood’s in-clique. But Lyssa refuses to snub him. What she never expects is the explosive impact her ongoing friendship with Harry will have on her close-knit pals—and on her marriage.

Here's to Having your Cake and Eating it Too (p310)sums up the lives of six women stuck in the Heights of Paradise Posse. As members of the local Women's League Board in the wealthy community of Paradise Heights, we come to witness the unravelling of the lives of six mothers as they struggle against the tides of slow suburbia. The monotonous life of carpools, cashmere sweaters and casseroles gives way as news spreads of the shocking divorce of DeeDee and Harry Wilder. The slower life gets the faster the chins wag in this slice of traditionalism meets modern suburbia. This divorce sends ripples of restlessness to resonate throughout Bouganvillia Drive as, one by one, each of these women befall their fate and succumb to the temptations of boredom meets infidelity. "It's not because he doesn't trust me, it's because I don't trust myself." (p229) The dynamics of female relationships is more interesting as Brown explores the hierarchy, status and power existent between these women and their perfect McMansions with manicured lawns. Brown successfully explores the implorable nature of insecurity and boredom of marriage in suburbia and does not seem to run out of material despite the fact that this topic has been exhausted in recent years through various mediums from Desperate Housewives to Wife Swap. A broader statement perhaps on emerging societal and behavioral trends in these days of instant gratification and our growing sense of entitlement begs the question....

Are we having our cake and eating it too?

It was okay.

I picked this book up because I thought the title was intriguing and I liked the cover. The story was okay: I didn't hate it (entirely) and I didn't enjoy it as much as I do my usual 3-star reads. I was really hoping that the book would not end with couples split by divorce; that was a futile endeavor. While I think Brown did a fair job of fleshing out well developed characters, I didn't really find myself connecting with any of them; my favorite was a tertiary male character that worked from home in a technical field and was maligned by the neighborhood despite being one of the most normal residents of all.

Although a little predictable, this was a fast and fun read. If you like Desperate Housewives you'll probably enjoy this book. It does leave the reader wondering why Lyssa, who is generally very likeable, would even be friends with these horrible, catty women who have nothing better to do than put other people down.

It was blatantly obvious to me very early on what the "twist" in the plot was, but the ending was still satisfying.

Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives is a look at the dark underbelly of the moneyed suburbs where extramarital affairs run rampant. The pitiful "Desperate Housewives" style attempts at attracting newly single Harry make are both hilariously funny and deeply disturbing. The book is surprisingly deep at times and gloriously scandalous throughout.

Each chapter starts off with a famous quote about marriage. These aren't romantic, gushy quotes, but rather funny and realistic ones that pair nicely with the tone of the book.

Lyssa has a tendency to be extremely naive, which makes her both endearing and occasionally annoying. She's a solid mom, with her children always as her top priority. Her marriage is in obvious shambles - her husband is only willing to have sex while watching sports and has admitted to her that he never actually fell in love with her - but she remains blissfully unaware of any trouble.

Denial runs rampant in Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives, which is on par with reactions to real life relationship problems as a general rule. It's almost scary how much you can see the traits of people you know in these characters.

"Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives" follows Lyssa Harper, a stay at home mom who lives with her husband and kids in an exclusive neighborhood in Paradise Heights. She is one of the only normal, non-scary women who make up the Paradise Heights Women's League Board (the rest of the women are gossips, back-stabbers, women after other's husbands). Lyssa is the presidents favorite to be next in line as president but Lyssa has to prove herself. That may be harder when Harry Wilder, a neighbor, suddenly becomes a single dad when his wife leaves him. Harry and Lyssa become close friends and the gossip begins. As the book goes on, it shows that things are not as pleasant as they seem in Paradise Heights.

I found the book to be over-all okay. It kept my attention and I wasn't really bored reading it. The one problem I had with the book was that it was predictable. I saw how the book was going to end way before the big reveal happened. But Lyssa was still a likeable character and I found myself rooting for things to work out for her. It's a pretty fast read too-I read it over a weekend. So though the book was predictable, I still really enjoyed it and I would recommend this book to any chick-lit readers looking for a good book to spend a weekend with.
