That Marshal Calkins is here to-night. He's standing there in front of the window, letting the wind of the night blow in his face!" The wind from the window, indeed, struck against the door communicatingwith Joe Cumberland's room, and shook it as if a hand were rattling atthe knob. The girl began to speak again, as swiftly as before, her voice thebarely audible rushing of a whisper: "The law will trail him, but Iwon't give him up.

The Night Horseman book. He was a contemporary of Zane Grey and I know that many consider him to have been the better writer. I have read a few of Grey's books, I liked them, but none had a quality of prose or depth of character to rival The Night Horseman. This was good, strong, atmospheric stuff, though I did have a couple of reservations. Firstly, I really think it would have helped if i had read that first book the series first, just to make some more sense of the hero.

A man, a dog, and a horse. The call of the wild geese. A very smart doctor from the east who finds there is a lot to learn from these desert people. A gunslinger who has a debt to settle

A man, a dog, and a horse.

Max Brand The Night Horseman. Duck your glasses," said the worthy in question. You ain't talkin' to a book, you're talking to a ma. "And in your attitude," went on the doctor, "there is an element of offense which if carried farther might be corrected by physical violence.

Don't remember what attracted me to Max Brand save that he is another author of stories of the American West. The book in question imbues the reader with a sense of foreboding and unknown menace heightened by the fact that it is left undefined as the book begins. As much psychological thriller as cowboy western.

There is non of the overt romantic interaction that characterizes other writers here. There are lengthy descriptions and side-plots that divert us from the story at hand. It all ends with the inevitable showdown.

The second book in the three book series, is pretty much as far fetched as the other two. A pre historic dna gened youth with superhuman strength living in the nineteenth century that speaks to his horse and wolf dog who understand every word he says, and obey better than your children, must choose between the beauty who loves him and the wild geese who are beckoning him to follow them off into the great unknown. Of course there's the usual villians along the way to make things interesting.

The whole story revolves around what the hero, Whistlin Dan Barry, is or is not. Is he sane or not? Is he cold and hard and unfeeling or not? Through the book the answer is variously yes, no, maybe. At the end, it stands at maybe. So I never understood what the author was doing. That aside, it has plenty of action and conflict.

I have read Max Brand western's since I was a young boy. After fifty to sixty years time It's like reading a new book. I didn't necessary like the way this one ended, but his main character is always the next thing to a superman in his abilities to do everything better than anyone else.

i have read Max before, and like all the others he never holds me like the I think he should, try the Longarm series or the Trailsman, they have 300 plus series and none are boreing, I have read then all, and some maybe 3 times, the best however is tony hillerman's, but start ane the first of the series, "The blessing way"
This is my first book by this author. I almost put it down but at some point it grabbed me. He paints pictures of people's souls. The characters and the story line are larger than life. This book took me back in time to a better place and better people.
