I read this book in middle school and I loved it. It provides a lively description of the Mongols and it drew me into their culture. You can also see the integration of the Mongols and China in this book from the view of a Chinese guy who went to Inner Mongolia (A province of China resided by Mongolians). I think the book can be better if the author could go to Mongolia the country because like the author wrote, really wolf gangs hangout in Mongolia and people in Inner Mongolia can only see them wonder by the border. This book also raises the issue of protecting the environment and preserving native culture, which I personally believe is a vital task for the government today. I am studying Mongols in university now and it reminded me of the days that I read this novel in my middle school dorm. It was quite popular among us back in the days and it still is a best seller. You can see it on the front shelf just by stepping into any bookstore in China. (Northern China at least) If you want to read some modern Chinese novels this is your choice! (Because to be honest there are really few that worth reading.)

I heard this book because of the popular movie version which is still showing in China now. People rave about the book, saying the book is much better than the movie. As an animal lover, I decided to read the book. However, after reading just a couple of chapters, I realize that the writing is actually pretty crappy. The characters constantly thinking or talking about histories, which makes no sense. Normal people do not talk about history in this manner in their everyday lives. Besides, the philosophy the auther trying so so so so so hard to preach in the book can be summarized as simple as Law of the Jungle. However, it appears that this premeval idea has been well adopted by the Chinese government lately, in the name of "China Dream".

Although I do not care about the book, I still want to see the movie to be released in the US and gain popularity. After all, what fascinates me is the wolves, the wild animals, not the stupid philosophy.
