Because this book includes scenes that were chopped out of the final cut of the movie and which would've made the movie make a LOT more sense.

It has been almost 20 years since the big screen version of the hit TV series THE AVENGERS was savaged by critics and disappeared quickly from movie theaters. Say THE AVENGERS today and people think of the Marvel Universe while the old show is virtually unknown to anyone born in this century. The 1998 film has never been out of circulation but its terrible reputation precedes it which is completely unfair because of all the post production tampering and editing that took place. The real story of the movie is here in this book which is taken from the original screenplay.

One big complaint against the film, and it's a completely justifiable one, is that it doesn't make sense. Granted it was never meant to be realistic and at times it's downright surrealistic but the movie, as released by Warner Brothers, was cut from 115 minutes to 89. Most of the cuts involve a prologue that explains why there are 2 Mrs Peels and why Sean Connery's character behaves the way that he does. Additional references to Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST are missing as well as some minor character motivation leaving the final story abrupt, choppy, and confusing thus insuring its dismal reception. Clips of these missing scenes can be found in the film's trailer.

All of the cut material is here in Julie Kaewert's novelization which makes for fascinating reading. Not only are all the inconsistencies explained but the characters have a lot more depth and background. Quotes from Shakespeare's TEMPEST open each chapter and the droll dialogue that was a hallmark of the old TV show is on full display. Most critics complained that Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman weren't like Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg. Well duh, but then they shouldn't have to be. Nevertheless the Warner Brothers top brass panicked and had the film drastically and haphazardly edited before dumping it into theaters.

The filmmakers did a courageous but foolhardy thing. They created a completely rebooted movie for an audience unfamiliar with the TV show. We are introduced to Steed and Emma Peel as if they are new characters just setting out together. Their developing relationship along with the interesting plot twists are what made the movie for me along with Sean Connery's droll portrayal of the principal villain. The 3 principals (especially Connery) and the director were justifiably pissed off at all the cuts that were made. I keep hoping a director's cut of the original 115 minute version will ultimately surface but until then this paperback will just have to do.

I'm glad I didn't waste money on the movie. This was pure hack work. I threw the book out with my rubbish. This abomination was concocted because the movie's maker tried to recoup losses on a flop and because the writer needed a job. Uma Thermal or Ralph Finished (parodies of the names of mediocre actors) are no Diana Rigg and Steed from the TV series.

The book takes the story of the Avengers and updates it into the 90's, slightly off center of course. Steed keeps his British tradition going, while Emma Peel represents the future for the service. Worth reading if you're a fan of the Avengers. If the movie stays close to the storyline, it should be worth seeing on the screen.

I saw the movie first and then got the book. It was great! It's just like the movie but it has some sceens cut from the movie. This book is one of my faves. I recomend this book to everyone!

Written in the not so serious style of the Avengers world. As long as you don't analyze the science behind the story, it makes for a good read, especially if you grew up watching Avengers repeats as I did. If the movie stays true to the story, it should do ok!
