Like all serious literature, The Widow and the Tree is a marvelous and confusing little book. The book’s jacket hails Sonny Brewer as a master storyteller, which indeed he is, so firmly rooted in the southern oral tradition he makes good writing seem easy when it is anything but that. The Ghosthead Oak, with a cancerous gall like a twisted human face, has a name, while the human characters do not, a curiosity I’ll let doctors of English ponder. Consider this: when he was riled, his rage was bigger than a blue thunderhead, meaner than a coiled moccasin.

The magnificent Ghosthead Oak has stood watch over coastal Alabama’s mysterious backwater bays and slow-running rivers, where bull alligators rumble the nerves of lesser creatures and every living thing has the capacity to kill, for five hundred years. Some say the fabled giant tree was once a knee-high seedling brushed by the black boot of Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez. No other tree along the entire coastal crescent from New Orleans to Apalachicola can rival its majesty or its power to draw people to it.In silence and with dignity, the Ghosthead has served as sentinel to the widow’s family land for countless generations. It was a childhood friend and a spirit guide in troubled times. Her father is buried in its shade. I met Sonny Brewer recently in a different context and found that he was a writer. Picked up 3 of his books on Amazon. This was the first that I read. Almost finished with the second one, "The Poet of Tolstoy Park. His work is based on true stories. When I finish I may go to Fairhope and see if there is actually a round concrete house in a place called Tolstoy Park.
These may be more interesting to me because I'm in the local and have heard some of the truths but his books are well written, spin an interesting tail. I can't wait to get to the 3rd book, "Cormac, a Dog gone Missing" because the description sounds much like my reaction if my best 4 legged friend went missing.
I recommend this.

Sonny Brewer weaves a beautiful, haunting, prosaic tale of a 500 year old oak tree in this fabulous little book. I first discovered Mr. Brewer in Stories From the Blue Moon Cafe, which he edited. It's an amazing collection of stories by Southern authors which I highly recommend. I then stumbled upon The Poet of Tolstoy Park: A Novel at the library and recognized Mr. Brewer's name. Reading that book, I instantly fell in love with Mr. Brewer's elegant writing style and artful storytelling.

He doesn't disappoint in this new book which I highly anticipated. The tale of the beautiful young widow and her relationship with the old Ghosthead Oak is at the heart of this moving tale. When the widow is talking to the veteran about the Ghosthead Oak and says, "Can't you see how loving something might cost you another thing you love? Like Abraham for the love of God was willing to sacrifice his son....", my heart just skipped a beat. His writing is top notch, so unlike many novelists we read nowadays. Then, there's the widow's zombie goats, the elusive panther and the widow's own fearless dog to contend with. Mr. Brewer takes the reader on a memorable, heart-wrenching journey in only 219 pages which left me wanting more. This book is pure Southern storytelling at it's very best and I highly recommend it. I'd have given it ten stars if I could.

Sonny Brewer is a masterful story teller. He captures the local flavor of the characters in costal Alabama. I thought the ending was a little flat.
It was too sad. The wrong guy won. Only positive was the widow and the vet got together. MAYBE the new seed dropped by the bird would root and grow, maybe not.
