Dolores Claiborne is the 32nd book published by Stephen King; it was his 27th novel, and the 22nd written under his own name. The book was released by Viking in November of 1992. The novel, along with Gerald's Game, was originally conceived as part of a larger work intended to be titled In the Path of the Eclipse. Dolores Claiborne lives on Little Tall Island. She worked for the wealthy Vera Donovan, a rich woman whose family had owned a summer home on the island.

Hidden Winter

I'm no huge Stephen King fan, unlike my husband who adores everything he touches, but I've always admired how versatile his writing is. I suppose I'm more of a secret admirer than I care to admit, though I've only actually finished It and the Shining prior to this book. The other stories, though I haven't read them, I've watched the film adaptations of many. But I have to say, I appreciate this book so much. It doesn't have the typical gory spooky details most of his stories seem to have, although even this one has its moments, but it has sincerity and deep meaning. I love the humor through the story and even Claiborne's voice is comical in itself. But the most moving part of the story for me is the relationship and overall love that two old women found in each other. I watched the movie first, which have me the desire to read the story and of course the book is much better. I finished it in about the days. Couldn't recommend it enough. It's clearly for anyone, but I think it will truly speak to the hearts of women. Thank you for this read, Mr. king. I wish I had gotten to it sooner.

This was my 1st Stephen King novel. I only read it because a dear friend of mine is playing Vera at the NYC Opera in 2 weeks. I’m not one to read fictions or novels so I usually speed read and honestly got quite frustrated at how long it took to get to the obvious. At the same time, I couldn’t stop reading & this book has consumed my every free minute for the last week. I even read it while blow drying my hair today because I knew I had to finish it today and today was when I realized, this story is awesome!! And in a world of multitasking, deadlines, to do lists that never end..... you have to make the time to read this book.

An astoundingly accurate portrayal of what it is like to live with someone who sexually abuses your child as a concerned mother. And as it is written by a man I am impressed with that alone. It is well done. It is not the whole story, not by far, but it is the roughest part of the story.

One of Stephen King's better writings! I would suggest no audience under the age of 17 due to the content covered. But I would highly recommend it to anyone over 18 who is interested in the subject. It is that well done. Sometimes fiction says things in a way real life never does. This is one of those.

This review is for the novel, but its also for the audiobook edition as well. I read this when it 1st came out. I thought it was awesome. I dont really remember though if i laughed while reading it because it was such a long time ago. But i do remember it was good & that it was one of Kings good 90s novels. All his 70s & 80s stuff is topnotch, but once the 90s hit, his stories started to be hit or miss. This was one of the hits. Anyway, i usually dont read books more than once except for my all time fav the shining which i read thrice & then listened to the audio version as well bringing the total up to 4. I dont like to read anymore. But i love listening to audiobooks now. So lately i been buying the audio versions of all his old hits so now i've "read" a lot of his books more than once which is a good thing because listening to the audio version gives you a slightly different experience. Sometimes that difference is good & sometimes its not. This audio version was down right hilarious to me LOL!! At 1st when i started listening to it i was quite turned off by Frances Sternhagens gruff narration. I know thats probably because for years i've had the sound Kathy Bates' portrayal of Dolores Claiborn in my head. So to hear a different voice associated with that character was kinda off putting for the 1st hour or so. But once the ball got rolling, then man i was rollin too!! Its 1 thing to read lines of dolores telling us about such things as how vera donovan had a "shiit" savings account and how it was paying out its dividends, but its a whole other thing to actually hear things like that being said aloud with the inflections that Frances Sternhagen uses. It was just priceless in the humor department. God i was laughing throughout the entire 9 hours+ of it. If you like this novel, you should most definately try the audiobook, no question. Even if you never read it, try the audio as well. Its not much like the movie though so be aware of that. The movie is actually much better than the novel. Its 1 of the only times i know of that a movie outshown the source book.

I devoured this book, and I enjoyed the movie version as well.

This book is one long near-monologue. The interruptions are slight, and there only to remind the reader that Delores Claiborne is talking to someone. Her story is sad, and I actually appreciated the film version, because it depicted Vera Donovan in a more empathetic light.

Delores as a teen falls in love. She had good parents, though not perfect - at least not towards each other. Delores Claiborne had three children. There are secrets, worse than the ones people whisper. Her savvy and cunning, and her steady determination allowed her to do the things she did to save herself and her children.

SPOILER: I really loathe that she donated all the money. She could have used it to help her children.

The story is mesmerizing. I am not a fan of this type of style, but still. Delores's voice is good enough to defeat the cons. And I especially enjoyed the forward.
