The notes at the end of the book said there was very little information on what actually happened to the women so it seems the author took a lot of poetic license to write a romance novel and wrap it in a historical event. The only reason I purchased the book was because we went to Roswell and took a tour of the historical homes and they referenced it there. The docent noted that originally the Indians living in Roswell were sent packing on the Trail of Tears.

From the pages of American history comes The Roswell Women As they watched a nation being torn asunder, the women of Roswell, Georgia could hardly stand idle. Left without their men, they ran the Roswell mill to provide a flagging Confederate Army with proud gray uniforms. But their defiance branded them as traitors to the North and they were mercilessly shipped northward in an act decried as brutal by both North and South alike. Allison Forsyth—beautiful young widow of Captain Coin Forsyth, the regal plantation mistress would survive the ravages of imprisonment to find a new love—until a ghost from the past threatened her hard-won freedom. Madrigal O'Laney—the fiery redhead lured men from both sides of the war with a promise of love. But the promise had a price and one man thought it was too steep to pay. Rebecca Smiley—Both friend and servant, she had groomed her mistress, Allison, for the life of an aristocrat. Despite the war, she would see to it that she regained her rightful place. Flood Tompkins—Disguised as a man, she would survive the war to stake her claim to a fortune, and make a choice that could change Allison's life forever.

This is the first time I have written a review on the hundreds of books I have purchased through Amazon. I like reading fictional history but found this book extremely lacking. It felt like reading a romance novel with very little true historical information. The characters were very one-sided and hard to believe. She didn't seem to make a connection to the pain they felt and the pain the Roswell women felt when they too were driven away from their homes.

Love love this story! If you like historic novels you won't be disappointed. Alot of the story is based on true events that happened in Roswell, GA and surrounding areas. This story has made a touching impression on me since I live close to Roswell and know the area well. Everytime I go by the Roswell Square, The Mill, the Presbytrian Church or see the antabellum houses I try and visiualize how it must've been back during the Civil War. It's a joy to read this novel and it's sequel everytime! However, I don't particularly like the cover picture compared to the original, but when it went back to reprint it had to be changed. The only thing that I find really likable about it is that it has the likeness of the Author Mrs. Statham, who I met last year!

This author makes the reader understand how difficult remembering history can be. You can feel the difficulties these women experience and survive. I hope there will be more stories from this writer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical novel mainly because I had never heard of this event. My imagination traveled with the women in an attempt to answer the question I asked myself, "What would I have done?" Having lived near Roswell at one time, I wish I had know about this incident. I would have enjoyed visiting the area and learned more about this tragedy of war.

Well written and hard to put down. Made history of the unfortunate incident come alive. I recommend it to anyone who likes to read historical novels.

I bought this as a gift. I've heard great things about the book and thought my sister would love it.
