With this, David Willson sets the tone for REMF Diary. Between these covers is a very funny, ironic novel of the Vietnam War. It is a story told by an army clerk stationed in Saigon. His perceptions of the war and of the paper war around him make for hilarious reading.

This book continues the saga of David Willson as he moves from Saigon to Long Binh for the last half of his tour of duty in Vietnam. Like the earlier book in Saigon, this book has an appealing quality of narrative honesty and attention to fact. The world we see here is the office occupied by a young man trapped into participation in the war, and with many unresolved ideas about it. He is an alert, intelligent young man who engages with the music, books, and news of the era and recounts his impressions. Refreshing in its lack of pretense, this book presents a filtered view of the war such as had by the tens of thousands of Americans who served in Vietnam in non-combat positions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand this troubled and inconsistent era.

Having slogged through the first book, REMF Diaries (read my review of it on Amazon), I felt that this book was a Rip Off.

A Rip Off in this sense: in the REMF Diaries the story does not conclude with the end of a year long tour in Vietnam. It seems to me (I am an in-country Army Vietnam veteran, 1st Log. & 1st Cav., 1967-1968) that the author published REMF Diaries to see how it would sell. When it did sell, he publishes Returns to conclude the tale and thus bilk readers out of more money.

I discovered that Returns is as mundane as the Diaries book in waaay fewer pages. I feel the author could have published ONE book, as it would have had the same effect and OUTcome. Instead, two books were published to increase the authors INcome. So it seems to me. Thus the Two Stars: I don't like being Ripped Off for purchasing and reading two books that very easily should have been one.

This is a book that is essential to put all facets of what the Vietnam war was about in perspective. It takes the reader on a day to day journey of a clerk stationed at Long Binh. There is sly wit to his wiry remarks regarding his often boring duties such as making coffee, burning trash, and typing endless 'make-work' reports. The reader will often wonder where the message is, but that is not the true point of why the author wrote this book. It is his statement, his realistic reality, taken from his diary, that makes it fill the totally ignored jobs thousands of GI's performed in the Vietnam war zones. Not a book for the 'John Wayne' type, but the ending is probably so unusual that you just want him to continue the story. It is certainly not boring to read and readily identifies with the language and music of the 60's. If you served in Vietnam, you will probably get some chuckles out of it, and make you remember little things that you thought forgotten. Well done, different, and necessary to preserve a piece of history that shows what the men did in the rear areas in Vietnam. Sincerely, Franklin D. Rast, author, 'Don's Nam,' and 'Ghosts In The Wire.'
