James A. Ritchie writes some of the tightest prose to be found anywhere. Just like the characters in this story, the prose is spare, to-the-point, but effective. The plot moves quickly, but the setting, pre-statehood Arizona, is always present, and the reader seems to stand with the central characters, who are in constant conflict with the Indians, robbers and murders, and each other. Reading a Ritchie novel for a writer like myself is akin to studying a how-to textbook, but very quickly one finds oneself getting lost in the story and rooting for the main characters.

Speaking from her heart on a wide range of topics-religion and the spirit, feminism and race, families and identity, politics and social change-Walker begins with a moving autobiographical essay in which she describes her own spiritual growth and roots in activism.
