Miles McGinty, Gilling's second novel, also begins with childbirth, in the long-ago, fabulous Australia that seems . Storytelling is a recurring motif in Miles McGinty, and one that makes the novel strongly reminiscent of Murray Bail's novel Eucalyptus.

This time it's Sydney in 1856. Two women give birth on the same evening and the story proceeds from there. A modern retelling of a fairytale, that novel has as its premise a man inviting suitors to win the hand of his daughter Ellen by naming all the types of eucalyptus tree on his property.

New South Wales, 1856: Miles McGinty and Isabel Dowling are born on the same night into different worlds. Miles is the illegitimate son of an actress in a troupe of travelling players, Isabel the rebellious daughter of a merchant banker, her home a red-brick mansion in one of Sydney's better suburbs. Both are destined to defy convention - and gravity. She rides in a balloon at the age of seven, defying the tweed-coated official who'd asked for a boy.

Miles McGinty will delight fans of Tom Gilling's debut novel The Sooterkin which became a New York Times Notable Book, and announced the arrival of a powerful and beguiling new writer. A novel that combines history and fantasy in a fluent, witty manner that never seems to strain for effect but constantly surprises with its twists of plot and subplot.

Books By Tom Gilling. Miles Mcginty: A Novel Sep 30, 2001.

Tom Gilling's New York Times Notable Book The Sooterkin was called "extraordinary. With his second novel, a delightful tale of true love in rough-and-tumble, turn-of-the-century Sydney, Gilling has "proved himself an exceptionally talented novelist twice over" (The Age). The Adventures of Miles and Isabel, already a best-seller in Australia, begins with two spectacular births on the same night in 1856

Автор: Gilling Tom Название: The Adventures of Miles and Isabel .

Описание: A new departure for the acclaimed author of Miles McGinty: the compelling story of a very likeable man in very serious trouble.

Miles McGinty Miles McGinty and Isabel Dowling are born on the same night into different worlds. Miles is the illegitimate son of an actress playing Hamlet, Isabel a rebel whose socialite mother longs to marry her off. Richly evocative of nineteenth-century Australia - a tumultuous world of dreamers and cheats and chancers - it's a novel about flying, falling in love, and the power of imagination.

Headline, £. 9, 208pp. MILES McGINTY has a head for heights. Drifting and grifting around late 19th-century New South Wales with Balthasar the Levitator, he comes into the possession of the notebook of the dead aeronautical visionary Tobias Smith. Miles enjoys a spell advertising Horatio’s Boomerang Brandy before being knocked down by one of the first bicycles in Australia.
