Alberto Cavarzere, Antonio Aloni, Alessandro Barchiesi. In a set of detailed studies, the contributors examine, across time, the idea of iambic through a wide variety of cultural settings-Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antiquity. What emerges most clearly is that the 'iambic idea' is impossible to define in absolute terms: rather, the form of iambic keeps varying in response to a vast variety of historical contingencies.

The later Archaic periods. The rise of the tyrants. Not that one should imagine concentration of wealth taking place in the form most familiar to the 21st century-namely, coined money. Dealings with opulent Asian civilizations were bound to produce disparities in wealth, and hence social conflicts, within the aristocracies of Greece. One function of institutions such as guest-friendship was no doubt to ensure the maintenance of the charmed circle of social and economic privilege.

Greek-speakers lived in hundreds of different villages, towns and cities, from Spain to Libya and the Nile Delta, from the freezing river Don in the northeastern corner of the Black Sea to Trebizond. We know far more about the minds of the Greeks’ predecessors and neighbours than we did before the landmark discovery of the Epic of Gilgamesh on clay tablets in the Tigris valley in 1853. Painstaking comparative studies have been published which reveal the Greek miracle to have been one constituent of a continuous process of intercultural exchange.

Twelve Voices from Greece and Rome: Ancient Ideas for Modern Times by Christopher Pelling & Maria Wyke. There are many things in the Histories to make you think, ‘Hang on a minute. Just as those poets in World War I could take different things away from Homer according to what they were looking for, you can also take different things away from Herodotus. And you will also, unless you’re very sleepy, take away things to make you second-guess yourself and monitor your own prejudices.

Iambic Ideas, explores the concept of the "iambic" as a genre. In a set of detailed studies, the contributors examine, across time, the idea of iambic through a wide variety of cultural settings--Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antiquity. What emerges most clearly is that the "iambic idea" is impossible to define in absolute terms: rather, the form of iambic keeps varying in response to a vast variety of historical contingencies. The variation is evident in such critical terms as the "iambic tendency" in Sappho, the "reusing of iambi" for Roman epodes, and even the instances of "iambic absence" in comedy and other such related forms. In the end, what is most characteristic about the "iambic" is its own inherent variability.
