1 - The Merchants of Venus. What's the point of running around? Does any of the planet look any different than the space pad we came in on, right over our heads?" Vastra hesitated.

The Space Merchants is a 1952 science fiction novel by American writers Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth. Originally published in Galaxy Science Fiction magazine as a serial entitled Gravy Planet, the novel was first published as a single volume in 1953, and has sold heavily since. It deals satirically with a hyper-developed consumerism, seen through the eyes of an advertising executive.
The book has some great satire, for 1953 that is. Too much of the satire has become cliché over the years so it has less of an impact on 21st century sensibilities
Only 11 left in stock (more on the way). The book has some great satire, for 1953 that is. Too much of the satire has become cliché over the years so it has less of an impact on 21st century sensibilities. Mr. Pohl’s slight revisions added back some of the flavor of the original satire but it’s sort of like eating a stale taco chip or watching the same SNL skit for the tenth time. That said, "The Space Merchants" isn’t just a 1953 satirical novel. It’s a great story as well and perfectly hits some hard science fiction buttons while lampooning others.

It didn't seem to be the best possible time to ask Fowler questions f me, his door opened explosively and Tildy Mathis lurched out. Her face was working with emotion. She stared at me, but I'll take oath she didn't know my name. Rewrites," she said wildly. I slave my heart out for that white-haired old rat, and what does he give me? Rewrites

The Space Merchants is, in many ways, their forebear. Our narrator is Mitchell Courtenay, a highly skilled and admired copysmith for one of the two giant advertising agencies, Fowler Schocken. Which brings me to one of the reasons I liked this book much more than most others of its type: Pohl and Kornbluth really seem to understand the advertising and corporate worlds they are criticizing. As outlandish as the world they create is, they establish its reality with an appropriate tone, nuance, and mentality sourced directly from Madison Avenue.
