Maggie O'Farrell writes with lyrical precision about sex, fear and sibling rivalry in The Distance Between Us, a graceful and hypnotic novel. No surprise, then, that her new book, The Distance Between Us, opens with a similarly eerie setpiece: a woman sees a dishevelled red-haired man on Waterloo Bridge, an encounter which compels her to take flight from her life as a successful London radio producer. Once again, there is no explanation. We are immediately tumbled into the interlocking stories of an extended Scottish-Italian family; twins Stella and Nina; and Jake, a British film assistant far away in Hong Kong.

O'Farrell structures The Distance Between Us with vividly observed vignettes. The middle of the book features a finely sustained section of what film-makers would call "shot-reverse shot" in which we see a scene through Stella's eyes, then through Jake's. She slowly widens the circle of her narrative to take in family networks, "the stranglehold of family", as one character reflects. However, the emotional distance between these people, and finally between us and them, is too great to bridge. Elaine Showalter's books include Inventing Herself (Picador).

The Distance Between Us is a love story about two people who have never me. The précis on the inside .

Don't tell me, I'll get it in a minute" I mumbled. If any writer could ignite passion between two characters oblivious to each other, Maggie O'Farrell would surely be the one. She's already written a glittering love story about the dead in After You'd Gone, so remote-control devotion should be a doddle. The précis is misleading I'm afraid.

I am a fan of Maggie O'Farrell. I find her writing interesting, and thought provoking. She writes beautifully, but not in obvious way. Nonetheless, I was slow to get into this one. I found myself impatient with the multiple points of view and the frequent flashbacks. It took me a long time to find my footing in the story and as a result it took me a while to care about the characters. But much like a game of pass the parcel, it is worth it to stay in it till the end for the reward. The reveal of the story by layers and degrees was handled masterfully. My impatience with her technique gradually gave way to admiration for the characters she created as a result.

There are many themes in this story, all handled with a subtle but insightful brush stroke. O'Farrell examines the pull and support of sisterhood. The notion of running away from problems and fresh starts. All from multiple angles. As frustrated as I was in the beginning, I was ultimately very satisfied with this read.

Greatly disappointed by this book, the format of which drove me up the wall. Short, quasi 'chapters', whose time lines jump all over the place. As a result, just when you get into the action, it stops and you are catapulted back to the person's childhood or a past memory. I persevered in the expectation of finding excitement to the story only to be even more let down at the end. The structure of the book is as if the author only had 15 minutes a day to write what I found to be a story without purpose.

This is the third book by Maggie O'Farrell I have read. I find her writing absolutely captivating. Despite the fact that this story had a much more satisfying ending (i.e., less dark), I don't think it will leave a very lasting impression me. I sobbed when I read After You'd Gone, and I was positively disturbed after reading The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. These are both much stronger emotions that just feeling warm and satisfied. Yet as much as I try to categorize which of these three I like best, I can't. Each has its own unique merits to recommend it.

In The Distance Between Us, we meet Stella and Jake and, in typical Maggie O'Farrell fashion, we are also given their family histories. As Ms. O'Farrell slowly lays the story out for us, one absorbing layer after another, we learn of the tragic chain of events that caused the deep dark secret Stella keeps, which she has spent her whole life trying to run away from and which has left her feeling unworthy of happiness. And we acutely feel Jake's loneliness and sense of detachment as he desperately searches for something to connect him to the world around him.

If you're new to Ms. O'Farrell, be warned: you might find her style difficult to read at first. She jumps around a lot chronologically, without warning, and if you're not paying attention it's easy to get lost. But if you're like me, you become so engrossed in the story that you quickly learn to ignore it. At least this book did not change perspective - it was all told in the third person, which isn't always the case with her writing. And for this reason, I believe The Distance Between Us would probably be a good starter book if you've never read Maggie O'Farrell before.

This is the fourth Maggie O'Farrell book I've read and I want to say it's her best yet, but I've felt that way about all of her books. She has a remarkable ability to pull you into the story and not let you go until you read the last word. Normally I hate when writers jump around in time, but O'Farrell is so skilled that instead of annoying you when she does it, you find yourself shaking your head in admiration at how brilliantly she handles the jumps. She's like an extremely talented juggler. Every ball is kept in play by some magical means only the juggler understands, and there's never a loss of control. Finally all the balls come home, and the reader is treated to a marvelously satisfying ending. I love O'Farrell's work. How I wish she'd been writing for a long time so that she'd have a huge backlist. Unfortunately, the only thing I have to look forward to now is her new book, which I've got on pre-order. RECOMMENDATION: Order all her books. You won't be sorry.

An amazing author, Maggie O'Farrell writes books that keep you enthralled right from the start. Throughout her book each character unfolds and exposes themselves leaving you hurrying to read more. There is suspense and mystery as she guides us through the lives of the people in her books.
This book, "The distance between us" and every Maggie O'Farrell book is a joy to read.
Before reading this book make a thermos of coffee and some sandwiches. Be prepared when you pick up this book to stay up all night and finish it in one sitting.
Thank you Ms O'Farrell.

This book may not be the best of all O'Farrells books but it should still be read. Much like with her other books, I couldn't put this one down. The story is a lot different then her other books - not as sad but just as compelling. It keeps you interested all the through. I loved it.
There is a tragedy and Jake agrees to marry the girl before she dies.
She then makes it through and he has married someone who is practically a stranger - she is thrilled and he isn't
