Rawlings, Oklahoma, 1945. Johnny Henry is coming home from the Pacific, and his estranged wife, Kathleen, secretly watches him step off the train to a hero's welcome.

Although her books are always easy to follow and can completely stand-alone, to truly enjoy this one I'd definitely recommend reading at least "With Heart" first as this is a continuation of Kathleen and Johnny's love story which started there. However, this book also brings back many of the characters who were in "With Hope" including Johnny's sisters Henry Ann and Isabel, along with their cousins, Pete and Jude Perry.

In a town were everyone knew or had heard of everyone else, Henry Ann was someone new to wonder about nry. It was hot gossip in town that Kathleen had left Johnny and was living in town. Hell of a note, some said. A man goes to war, comes home, and his wife won’t live with him. If Johnny was aware of the curious glances following him and Henry Ann, he didn’t show it. After they were seated, Henry Ann looked around, then plucked the printed menu from between the salt and pepper.

MEGA FREEDY
AFTER THE PARADE is the last installment in Dorothy Garlock's "Dolan Family" series. You will also get a greater understanding of Johnny and his past/childhood if you've read "With Hope" first too. For those of you who would like to read the entire series and don't already know, here is the reading order:

RIBBON IN THE SKY (Letty Pringle & Mike Dolan)
WITH HOPE (Henry Ann Henry & Tom Dolan)
WITH SONG (Molly McKenzie & Hod Dolan)
WITH HEART (Kathleen Dolan & Johnny Henry)
AFTER THE PARADE (Kathleen & Johnny Henry)

As always, Ms. Garlock has written a wonderful tale of life in a bygone era. Her style, descriptions, and dialogue are truly top-notch and thoroughly engaging. While I did enjoy this story, it was much sadder than I'm used to from her. Kathleen and Johnny are separated throughout, and my heart near broke for Kathleen and all she went and goes through. Johnny is still too stubborn and prideful for his own good, but I did feel for him. Although he brings on most of his misery himself, he does feel he's doing right for Kathleen's sake so I couldn't fault him much for that simple reason. The stalker was an interesting and unique touch and added some suspense to the mix. Then there was the epilogue which was fantastic! I was just so overjoyed to see these two finally get their happy ending. Overall it was a very good book (and series) and I'd easily recommend both =)

I have read all five books in this series and all were unique in their own way. Of course, Dorothy Garlock is an awesome author and her books are bittersweet. If you've read any other books in this series you won't be disappointed.

I love Dorothy Garlock books, she write about small town life that could be anyone and put a lot of feeling in her characters. The Kindle version was full of misspelled words and even had just a letter in places that made no sense at all. I still give her story 5 stars as I doubt she does the proof reading. Love you Dorothy, keep the stories coming. Thanks, Shirley
