This was a very well written story by Ms. Mansfield, it was interesting, original (this was a guy coming from America to England, instead of a hoyden from a England's country side, to be debuted in the London society), and it was funny with comparison of the two cultures; The writing was smooth, dialog witty, and feelings believable; Even the. second and third characters were interesting and likable.

I've liked all the previous books I've read by this author, but this one was a disappointment. I'm glad I got it on sale for 99 cents. Neither he H, nor the h is particularly likable. If you read the blurb, you've pretty much got the story. There aren't too many plot complications that aren't complete cliches. I know that's a given in a romance, but this book just didn't have much going on. Even the person set up to be he villainous rival was kind of a damp squib. At first I disliked the h more than the H, but that changed about midway. When the h felt deceived and made a fool of, her family (and the H) pooh-poohed her feelings and basically said it was her fault she felt that way. I agreed with the h: she was deceived and made an object of fun in a very mean-spirited way. At that point I flip-flopped and preferred the h to the H. Don't expect much romance here.

I often despise the American comes to England to claim a bride/inheritance novels. This one is an exception. I like the main characters and the way the heroine grows though the story. It is also just good fun. A good read and a satisfying outcome for all parties involved. I definitely will be reading more of Mansfield's regency romances.

This book is about Miss Anne Hartley and Mr. Jason Hughes. Anne is a gently bred young English lady and Jason is an American who has come to England to become a peer of the realm. Anne and her family must help Jason learn the English manners and customs needed for his new position. I loved this book. It was humorous and heartwarming and I highly recommend it.
Daizil
A delightful regency story. It was funny. I found that it was a delightful read. I won't tell you what happens. I will tell you that it was enjoyable.
Weetont
A silly story and just OK.

If you enjoyed Georgette Heyer's The Unknown Ajax, this Regency Romance is for you. The basic premise is the same, a noble family learns that in their opinion, a common man has inherited the Nobel Title and fortune of the Viscount. In this case, instead of being in trade, he is a uncouth American.

It is most interesting to see how another fine writer handles such a fun theme. The new Viscount Manwaring is a annoyance to the daughter of the house, intentionally meeting her somewhat exaggerated expectations and enjoying her aggravation. Although the plot is similar, different characters, emphasis, and writing style makes it a unique and delightful read.

The storyline is hilarious and also quite deep psychologically. One of the author's best books, in my opinion. Highly recommended!
As much as I like this author, I don't like the heroine. I wish the author had taken a moment to show us her softer side while she was teaching Jason to be proper rather than tell us about it. It would have made her more likable...instead she comes of as shrewish and angry all the time. But the hero was good...
