Start by marking The Golden Age of Censorship as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. Possibly the only novelist of his generation to be born by the light of a paraffin lamp, Paul Hoffman spent much of his childhood on airfields all around the world watching his father – a pioneer of sports parachuting and European Champion – jumping out of aeroplanes. After a long battle with the English educational system which involved avoiding school whenever possible he was offered a place to read English at New College, Oxford when no other university would interview him.

Paul Hoffman's novel is in many ways a plodding affair. Purcell relates events with a minute attention to detail, describing scenes in which he does not appear in a godlike third person narrative. At times, dialogue is reported in the manner of a play script without the stage directions

Paul Hoffman's novel is in many ways a plodding affair. At times, dialogue is reported in the manner of a play script without the stage directions. Letters and memos are sprayed fastidiously about the novel as the British Film Secretariat (the fictional name here for the British Board of Film Classification, formerly the British Board of Film Censors) goes about its business. This detailed exposition takes precedence over characterization

Dazzling, masterful and compelling, a novel that challenges our ideas about censorship, prejudice and the fine line between art and exploitation. It is 1984 and video has just arrived in British homes. With it comes a widespread distrust and fear. The public dread a deluge of porn, violence, cannibalism and dismemberment. Eager to reflect the public mood, Parliament grants sweeping powers to the chief film censor, Nick Berg.

If there was a choice as to who would write a book about film certifiers and their actions in and around their closeted work life, Paul Hoffman would be top of the list. He seems in an ideal position to fictionalise his times at the BBFC in creating this study of power, corruption and lies at his veiled British Film Secretariat. However if there was a choice as to what he used his expert knowledge toward, it might be a different matter.

There are some witty film references: the opening sequence, with a dead Berg at his own memorial service, hints at Sunset Boulevard and Citizen Kane. Despite lingering a little too long in places, the novel is a fascinating insight into an organisation that until very recently kept its decision-making process well in the shadows.

The Golden Age of Comic Books describes an era of American comic books from 1938 to 1956. The superhero archetype was created and many well-known characters were introduced, including Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America, and Wonder Woman. The first recorded use of the term "Golden Age" was by Richard A. Lupoff in an article, "Re-Birth", published in issue one of the fanzine Comic Art in April 1960.

Hoffman structures most of his narrative around the exchanges between his highly articulate characters, which at times makes the novel feel as if it was built from essays on film theory. He also beds in a dense, murky plot that reaches deep into the institutional character of the board itself but which never provides enough heat to set Hoffman’s story alight. Hoffman is a bracing and questioning writer but his struggles to make the novel-form fit his purpose sometimes undermine the impact of the pertinent questions he raises.

A dazzling, masterful and compelling novel that challenges our ideas about censorship, prejudice and the fine line between art and exploitation.
