Dr. Jekyll’s ‘disappearance or unexplained absence for any period exceeding three calendar months,’ the said Ed-ward Hyde should step into the said Henry Jekyll’s shoes without further delay and free from any burthen or obli-gation, beyond the payment of a few small sums to the members of the doctor’s household. After a little rambling talk, the lawyer led up to the sub-ject which so disagreeably pre-occupied his mind.

Well," said Mr. Enfield, "I can't see what harm it would do. It was aman of the name of Hyde. Hm," said Mr. Utterson. What sort of a man is he to see?"

Enfield and the lawyer were on the other side of the by-street; butwhen they came abreast of the entry, the former lifted up his cane andpointed. Did you ever remark that door?" he asked; and when his companion hadreplied in the affirmative. It is connected in my mind," added he,"with a very odd story. Well," said Mr. What sort of a man is he to see?"

Others will follow, others will outstrip me on the same lines;and I hazard the guess that man will be ultimately known for a merepolity of multifarious, incongruous and independent denizens. I, for mypart, from the nature of my life, advanced infallibly in one directionand in one direction only. Jekyll was no worse;he woke again to his good qualities seemingly unimpaired; he would evenmake haste, where it was possible, to undo the evil done by Hyde.

Published as a 'shilling shocker', Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy gave birth to the idea of the split personality. his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter'. I surprisingly did not already know the mystery behind Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but the penguin classic I picked up presumed that I did since everyone knows. duh! Don't you know Penguin that some people do truly live under a rock? The is a novella, so I didn't get overly attached to any aspect of the story.

Read first when I was barely a teenager, I was both intrigued and frightened by the idea of the good and evil within us all being divided between two selves: one possessed of good qualities, and one inherently evil. The thought of two halves of the same person, each taking their turn at the helm of one being that bent to their figure and form was fantastical, but also quite terrifying. The good side, tall, erect, and seemly (the good face of the good doctor), and the evil side, squat, soul-deformed, and bent over.

Worse still, Dr Jekyll is unwilling to listen to stories of Hyde’s chilling behaviour, and retreats into his laboratory work when confronted. As would seem fitting for a tale as strange as this, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde comes with a number of literary legends attached.
