La vida es sueño book. Here is another classic play from Spain’s Golden Age. Calderón de la Barca is sometimes considered to be Lope de Vega’s successor-a man who took Spanish theater in the direction of refinement and sophistication. Lope de Vega’s plays, for all of their formal accoutrements, are rather simple human dramas; while Calderón was attracted to more philosophical themes.

The most famous of all Calderon's varied and romantic dramas, this seventeenth-century masterpiece by the great Spanish playwright explores the conflict between free will and predestination as it focuses on the life of Segismundo, a Polish princ.

The most famous of all Calderon's varied and romantic dramas, this seventeenth-century masterpiece by the great Spanish playwright explores the conflict between free will and predestination as it focuses on the life of Segismundo, a Polish prince imprisoned at birth by his father, the King. The monarch's heartless action, precipitated by astrologers who predict the boy will one day usurp the throne, paves the way for a series of events that turn the son against the father and lead to rebellion.

I liked this because I needed an English version to discuss the play as a source for a novel we are reading in Spanish in an independent reading course. We didn't have time to read the Spanish. But, because of the way in which the book falls electronically, I felt uncomfortable with it. You were never quite sure who was speaking without having to turn the page, which was awkward and annoying. I don't even know if the translation was accurate or the edition good because I didn't have time to really look at those. I do know my student got out of it what I needed for her to get, so I am happy with it.

"Life is a Dream" -- A classic! Has a very famous soliloquy. Has inspired several works of art, including an opera, and the Senior Recital of Miggy Torres, published/performed composer, conductor, and arranger, currently completing undergraduate work at Ithaca School of Music. He welcomes discussion of this piece of literature and a wide range of topics, from music and art to science, religion, culture, languages, cooking, wine, humor, and on and on! Consumately professional, insatiably curious, ever approachable. Check out his website!
